Tire shaving or truing ?

Is there anyone around that still does this ?
Ive got almost new 19.5's on my towrig and one for sure but probably al of them have a little shake after roadforce balancing.
The tire guys are telling me they could see a little out of round but its as good as its gonna get on a 19.5 ?

Wondering if I can get at least the fronts shaved or trued back to round...

Burt Brothers in SLC used to but they will only shave new tires. They told me that any dirt or debris on the tires trashes the blade really easily.

We shave tires, but we don't do anything that big, and also only do new tires for the reason stated above.

But, if they are 19.5s, I wouldn't balance them with weights. Put CounterAct balance beads inside the tires. With anything in the medium duty class of tires, this is always going to be your best balance.

Assuming it is a 225/70R19.5, put 10 ozs in each tire front and back.

I took it in this morning to Burt Brothers and as stated above I couldnt get them trued up/ shaved.
All 6 had weights on them already but then they turned out to have beads in them as well.
We pulled off the weights (leaving the beads) and it was WAY worse.
It didnt seem like these guys were used to working on this kind of stuff as it took 4 guys and lots of head scratching to even get them mounted on the balance machine.

I took it to a heavy duty tire shop after the 1st fiasco and had all 6 un mounted, cleaned out, re-mounted and re-balanced etc...
That greatly improved it but Im still not super happy at 75-80 mph with the smoothness and thats right at the speed Im usually towing.
At 65mph its smooth and at 90mph its also smooth.

I may be at the point of just living with it as is or going to 17's or 20's.. These things are so stiff I think Im just feeling the road and its shaking the truck a little rather than an actual tire vibration issue. You can tell when you hit a pothole or crack in the road these things have absolutely no give in them..
If they werent basically new tires I would have swapped them out by now for new wheels and tires with a more road friendly size and construction.

Yeah, balance beads mixed with weights is no good, and the wrong amount of beads is also no good. No tire will be perfectly round, but especially medium duty tires. It is completely normal for tires to have 'some' hopping/movement, but if it is drastic there may be another issue going on (tire separation/delamination for one).

Make sure your pressures are what your truck wants, NOT what the tires want. You would be surprised how many people go off of the tires versus the truck. Make sure that is good, and that will probably help your ride too, but as @Hickey mentioned, these tires are built for heavy duty use and weight. You will never get a factory ride out of those style of tire. Lets just say they are definitely overkill for your truck (but doesn't mean they will not work either). Nice truck!

I looked up the inflation tables and Continental doesn't recommend running them below 70psi ( Max of 120 ).
Ill lower them all to 70 and see how that feels.
Even at 70 psi they will be good for enough weight to bend my truck in half and way more than my rear axle would ever hold..lol

I dont drive my towrig enough to ever get the tread wear bonus these have but I do like knowing I will prob never kill one on the highway somewhere. These will age out and weather crack YEARS before I ever notice the tread getting low on this truck...
I dont think Id ever pay for a setup like this but they were already on the truck.

Unfortunately, Im working on another issue this weekend and gonna put the stiff tires on the back burner for a bit.

I changed out all the fluids in this new truck so I could take it to Tucson next week for the Duct Tape drags.
The transfer case fluid was super low and black. There were also chunks of gear teeth...UGH...
I flushed it out as best could with a little magnet and forced fresh fluid through it till it was clean, then filled it back up.

40 miles later everything under the truck was wet. I brake cleaned it all up and found the dreaded Pump rub hole in the case.
If I knew how long it was run like that Id maybe order the new back half and run it or even just JB weld it for a temp fix but with the gear teeth in the fluid, Im swapping the whole unit out for a fresh reman t-case today or tomorrow.

It wasnt making any noise at all and went in and out of gear no problem though so who knows.
When I picked up the truck it didnt appear to have been leaking any time recently and wasnt clean like it had been washed so I think it had been running really low on T-Case fluid for quite a while.

I also have to swap the oil pan on the C10 Im taking down to race... Brand new Weind oil pan leaking out of the welds ? WTF ?
If it was going to the dezert Id bring extra oil and run it ( Its not a huge leak but at a drag strip they tend to frown on oil leaks..)

Gonna be a couple late nights last minute as usual before Wednesday morning when we hit the road in the completely untested towrig and hot rod we are taking down to race..lol
At least the trailer is tested and good to go..LOL

Me too..
Except its becoming a money pit quickly...lol

Good 8.1 big block trucks are getting hard to find with low miles. This one has the Allison.
I can tell its been tuned as there are no secondary O2's and theres no check engine light, the tire size is wrong ( came with 215/85/16 stock ) but the speedo is accurate according to my GPS, and it has the newer style tap shifter installed which Im told needs a tune to make work as well being a 2001. Has a cold air intake and flowmasters installed as well.
Overall, its a nice truck and should work out great as a towrig once I figure out all the issues and fix them.
Should be about 70K cheaper than a new one as well..LOL

I was gonna sell my SRW Ex cab shortbed 8.1/6 speed manual truck but I may keep it around a while afterall.
It runs and drives perfect but with the 6" lift and bigger tires its a little "squishy" pulling the 30' enclosed and Ive been thinking about buying a gooseneck that will haul 2 trucks lately for some reason.....
The 8.1 manual trans trucks are damn hard to find as well.

Well,
Fresh x-fer case didnt explode, 14hrs after it was put together and installed it had the trailer hooked up and was driving towards Tucson.

Found that 80psi in the tires is probably a little too high for my needs but it runs down the road nice and smooth now.
I think some of the vibration may have been in the case.

This truck pulls so much better than expected, Im digging the Allison for towing.
Except for the absolutely terrible mileage its a spectacular towrig.
Pulling a 22' flatbed with a truck on it and loaded with a full bed of tools, chars, and everything but the kitchen sink it averaged 9 MPG at an average of 80-85mph for like 1900-2000 miles total.

Now, Ill just never check the mileage again and be happy with it...LOL

I hate 19.5's for the exact reasons stated above: Min 70psi, stiff sidewalls and hard tread compound. You gotta think even a bobtail weighs far more than a fully loaded truck. Some truck bro would surely trade you for a newer set of 1 ton factory 20" takeoffs.

With that load at that speed, I'd say 9 mpg is pretty impressive? (maybe I'm tainted by my V10?) I can't imagine a Cummins powered rig getting under 23 mpg with that load but anything else should that should be good? Tell me a deezel anything HD pickup at that speed would get better than 12?

I agree. My 2015 cummins would be in the 8-9 mpg with that load. (Don't report me to the Cummins forums for putting out those kinds of numbers 😉)
