It's running stock rims, the rear wheel wells haven't been cut and it doesn't have power steering (yet). Suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
Dave

I am assuming you are sprung under. I was running stock springs sprung under I had 31". I also have a friend that has a 2.5" spring lift and he is running 33's with no problem.

Hope that helps.

I could sell you a set of 31's mounted and balanced with a spare on a stock wheel the other four are on some newer looking aluminum rims and have plenty of tread still on them.. they are on my runner right now but not for long since I have a set of 33's just waiting for me to lift it and put them on how does $250 sound for all five? can get pics if you would like

Thanks for the ideas...

Yes, a spring over sounds great, but I want to get the thing on the road first since my wife is anxious to be driving one again. Would it make sense to do the SOA at the same time as power sterring? Is it kosher to ask for recommendations on a shop that could handle both of those for me?

Sounds like 31's are the way to go for now. We have BFG ATs on our Yukon and really like them.

Cntryman78, I would like to see some photos, thanks.

If you are going to do spring over, I would do power steering at the same time or before. I have driven a FJ-40 with 35's and stock steering, and it is not easy (Don't put your thumbs inside the wheel  )

I would also suggest looking into extending the wheel base when you do spring over.

Yup :D

Reasons to do it at the same time

1. Steering geometry will change
2. Steering lengths will change

No sense paying twice to get steering rods made ;)

Sure it is :D ;)

Give me a call, we just finished a SOA on a 81 FJ40 (factory PS) and we are currently doing a PS on a 76'

:D

If you do a spring over there are pros and cons.
If you are looking to do more extreme trails
Just by a lift cause springing it over will make you hop alot
so it makes for alot more brake downs on trail.
Unless you have a winch
I suggest to buy a real lift though and stay under axle.

Maby even do away with the rear springs.

There definately are pros and cons, but a SOA done "right" will not cause any brake downs. I dare say I use my Cruiser alot, and I have never experienced a break down as result of axle hop (knock on wood ;)), and even a SUA lift can require a traction bar, springs wrap regardless of the axles mounting (albeit more in the case of the SOA due to the increased moment as result of the distance from traction to the spring).

And truly there are no commercially available SUA lifts that can correctly net a 6" lift on an FJ40, not to mention the same need for correct axle steering geometry (cut and rotated knuckles) and a level draglink to prevent bumpsteer (hi-steer or double steering arm).

Some of the most capable vehicles came factory SOA (Toyota mini-trucks and 4Runners come to mind), there is no comprimise on a properly built SOA IMHO.

That being said, if your not looking for a tire bigger than 33", than go with a proven suspension kit such as Old Man Emu, Dakar, etc. Can't beat them. There are also custom options such as Alcan, but as with anything it gets more expesive as you go, and no sense re-doing work. I know alot of people that upgraded from a SUA to a SOA, I can't think of one that went the other direction (on the same vehicle).

They look good

but I think I want to run my stock rims for a while since they are freshly painted and have new stock hubcaps. What could you sell just the tires for?

Thanks

i would say that splitting them up the rims would not sell for much on here.. but let me see there is someone else that wants just the tires as well and someone that may want the rims.. depending on what I can get for the wheels kinda determines what i need out of the tires but i'll let you know after I talk to him
