It's running stock rims, the rear wheel wells haven't been cut and it doesn't have power steering (yet). Suggestions welcome.
Thanks,

Is it kosher to ask for recommendations on a shop that could handle both of those for me?
yellowstoner said:Yes, a spring over sounds great,
If you do a spring over there are pros and cons.
If you are looking to do more extreme trails
Just by a lift cause springing it over will make you hop alot
so it makes for alot more brake downs on trail.
Unless you have a winch
I suggest to buy a real lift though and stay under axle.
Maby even do away with the rear springs.

There definately are pros and cons, but a SOA done "right" will not cause any brake downs. I dare say I use my Cruiser alot, and I have never experienced a break down as result of axle hop (knock on wood ), and even a SUA lift can require a traction bar, springs wrap regardless of the axles mounting (albeit more in the case of the SOA due to the increased moment as result of the distance from traction to the spring).
And truly there are no commercially available SUA lifts that can correctly net a 6" lift on an FJ40, not to mention the same need for correct axle steering geometry (cut and rotated knuckles) and a level draglink to prevent bumpsteer (hi-steer or double steering arm).
Some of the most capable vehicles came factory SOA (Toyota mini-trucks and 4Runners come to mind), there is no comprimise on a properly built SOA IMHO.
That being said, if your not looking for a tire bigger than 33", than go with a proven suspension kit such as Old Man Emu, Dakar, etc. Can't beat them. There are also custom options such as Alcan, but as with anything it gets more expesive as you go, and no sense re-doing work. I know alot of people that upgraded from a SUA to a SOA, I can't think of one that went the other direction (on the same vehicle).
