Top 10 list: Vehicle Failure

Okay guys, let's have you top ten list: What are your ten most common or most anticipated vehicle failures while off roading? They can be things you have experienced, things seen on the trail, or things your buddies have experienced. Something as stupid as a tire carrier falling off your rig or as complicated as a blown head gasket/cracked head. Also, what do you do/have you done to either prevent said failures or what do you do to repair them on the trail? Try to keep your essay to 500 words or less :D

Here's my ten things I want to be prepared for:

1)Front driveline failure/U joint
2)Rear driveline failure/U joint/CV
3)Front axle/U joint
4)Rear axle
5)Blown bead/puncture
6)Bent tie rod/TRE broken/pitman arm failure
7)Shock tower/leaf spring U bolt/shackle hanger/leaf spring center pin
8)Starter failure(I have an auto...no starter=sitting duck)
9)Fuel pump takes a crap
10) I couldn't come up with a good #10.....maybe something minor like a blown fuse or minor electrical demons.

There are certainly a lot of spare things you could carry "just in case", but let's face it, we can't carry everything, and I'm trying to develop a list of things I can bring that won't add 8000 pounds to my rig.

Spork

Tin Foil Hat Equipped
Extra oil. I've been asked for oil more than any other single item.
Something to repair blown hoses and belts (or at least a spare belt to turn your water pump).
Duct tape and bailing wire go a long way.
Some spare wire for the electrical gremlins.
Assorted nuts and bolts various sizes.
Tools. Big hammer, wrenches, screwdrivers
A knife.
motorcycle tie down strap.
Probably more junk just in case but everything I've listed shouldn't be more than a few pounds.

I think it depends on the rig and driving style :-\

what I carry that I worry about is;

1. spare fuel pump

2. front shafts for long trips.

3. fuses and wire

4. spare pitman arm

5. duct tape and bailing wire(can be a real greif saver)

6. don't go alone, because you really can't account for everthing that can and will break eventually.

1) Starter
2) Fuel Pump

Even though I've never had a problem with either of them, but they would cause a lot of grief.

I think next on the list would be:
3) Electical problems (I had some unexpected electical glitches last time I was in Moab.) :(
4) Front driveline (wayy out of balance, could kill my pinion bearing if I drive too fast...)

That's all I can really think of for mine. Now that I'm jinxed I might as well list every part on my rig now. :D

you better build a bigger trailer Kurt  :D

I actually carry most of that stuff in the Cruiser on any long distance trips (Moab, Rubicon, etc)... If you think about packing all the stuff I listed, it fits into a couple of parts bags... :D

:D Did you give me the bungy cord? I tried finding out who it was but I couldn't remember. If so, I still have it if you want it back.

Lets see. Things I see break alot

1: d44 hubs
2: d44 outers
3: d44 inners
4: d44 everything else
5: steering box/resevoir/fittings
6: rear driveline
7: fuses
8: electrical stuff
9: shocks
10: t-case output yokes

Things I bring on the trail

-Small bag of tools to change d44 hubs and perform minor repairs(open end wrenches, plyers, vice-grips, pics, screwdrivers with assortment of heads)
-electrical supplies (cutters, wire, tape, fuses)
-drive flanges for my broken hubs.

Anything more major than electrical or hubs, and I probably don't even own the tools or possess the ability to fix it anyways. So I just rely on the help of others who get tired of wheelin' with my un-prepared ass. :D

I do however carry spare tires, hubs, shafts, joints, and a full assortment of fluids, nuts/bults/screws/window cleaner etc. in my truck. If I'm ever on a trial that I'm going to be gone for awhile, I carry most of that stuff with me. In moab, I leave most of it in teh truck for weight/space reasons.
