I know exactly where your talking about, its near the beginning of the trail. Its down in a wash right at the bottom of a couple fins you can turn right. The obstacle climbs up out of the wash at the end where it intersects the main trail.

Yeap, sounds like the place... its easy to see where the normal obstacle is to go up... and about 8 to 10 feet to the left of the normal route there is an awkwardly large boulder that I would have never thought to drive up... and a beat to $h!t looking Toyota crawled straight up it. I would be nice to find a pic of that spot.

I believe you guys are talking about Dump Bump. That place was like crack to Toyota guys. Too bad it's off limits now.

Along those same lines, I could never get my 4 Runner over Widowmaker, where as my Jeeps always made it. Doesn't mean Toyota's are garbage.

When you're comparing rigs, you're mostly just comparing wheel base. Brand really doesn't matter.

wheel base and gearing plus driver is what its all about;)

hahaha very funny i would not agree though, yes with a big V8 you dont need gearing but it sure helps to control your crawl better you just dont have to gear it to 200:1 like a 4poper yota more like 80:1. And besides toyotas are not the only gutless 4x4s, old CJ7 and older inline 6's and the 4popers they have put in jeeps are just as gutless if not more, though the inline 6's do have good low end grunt

Oh, I see now. So you're saying that a Toyota geared at 80:1 will wheel twice as good as my Rubicon with it's wimpy 46ish to 1 ratio?

I'll stand by my original statement. I believe you'll find having the correct axle gear ratio is far more beneficial on the street than it is on the trail.

My first rig... 1992 toyota p/u 92k 22re 4in drop bracket lift 33's 4.10 gears chrome everything. This was before I knew anything built when I was 17, but I loved this truck sold when I left on my mission in 2005 but ran most trails in moab with no problems. Going up bump dump... I was a idiot

then I went on a hiatus and listened to my mom and bought a reliable car to go to college with...
Decided I wanted a project and I always wanted a fj40. I found one and bought 1970 fj40 all stock minimal rust. It was short lived I Brought it home and a guy offered me 1k more then I paid for it, and I had decide to buy an engagement ring for my now wife so I sold it... but my wife is worth it.

Getting married and need a car for my soon to be wife I bought a 1998 toyota tacoma Trd v6 94k on it, put sliders, kc lights and bought some 31'' km2's.

Decided it was to nice to beat up, but keep to be my daily driver. Thought I could build a more capable rig, and it would be cheaper. Found this a 1980 toyota pickup

Built it up and sold

Now I am building this 1985 toyota 4runner 22re. Bought it in parts a started project that had been sitting for years... had to roll it on trailer but had parts: ARB locker, Ifs rear axle, Ifs steering box, Brand new rebuilt motor with LC engineering pistons, and a bunch random parts.

Come now BC your original statement had nothing to do with the correct gear ratio on the street is better then on the trail;) Dont try and pull the wool over our eyes:rofl:

I was talking simply about transfercase gears and how lower transfercase gears help you have more control

i also disagree with this statement

i used to agree with it when i had a 4cyl... also i doubt that the 22re makes more power than the jeep 2.5 or 2.4 (FI of course) but i'd be interested in seeing some numbers out of curiosity.

there are some good looking yotas in here, keep 'em coming

edit: just checked wiki (super reliable lol) and they have the mpfi 2.5 making 120 hp @5250 and 139 lb·ft @3250 and the 22re making 112 @4,600 rpm and 142 @3,400 rpm

sounds like they are really close

there are some really good looking yotas on here, and as far as gearing goes i think its all just a prefrence because it also depends highly the way i see it, if you have a manuel or a auto.
