Toys For Homeless Chrildren

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
I've noticed that my two girls are getting pretty bratty about their toys and stuff. Seems to always get this way as we get close to Christmas. I always like to try to clean out a lot of our old toys to make room for the new ones that will be coming in. My girls just don't seem to realize how blessed we are. It got me thinking about taking them to a shelter to show them how other people live. We could take our old toys that we would normally give to DI, and give it to them.

Has anyone done anything like this before? Can you recommend a place for us to go to? I worry that these people would think they are on display for us and I don't want that, but I do want my daughters to know that while they have many, many stuffed animals, other children have none. And that we should be willing to help them out as much as we can.

This year we are sending some of our un-used toys up to Primary Children's Hospital. Another option is to call around to local shelters and see if they'd be willing to take something in for the kids. A lot of the smaller shelters closer in suburban areas probably get a lot less attention during the holidays for this kind of thing. It would be cool to see some of them hooked up.

The Road Home in Midvale is open for families with children (closed to singles). You may call them to see if they could use them. I have taken youth groups down there to have little games, activities, root beer floats, etc and they have always appreciated the efforts. I am not sure what they could do used toy donations, but it would be worth a call.

You could also talk to the counsellors at yoir local jr high school. They know of families in need and might be willing to help. They probably wont let you go visit the family, but they can help.

At least that is how it works at my school. Most people would be shocked at the crap the kids in your own schools go through.

i think any shelter would be more than happy to have people come and help them out some. I want to take my kids to places to volunteer when the get older so they can see how good they have it. Thought about giving the christmas gifts to kids in need instead of mine but my wife wont go for that.

In years past my wife and I have done sub for santa instead of gifts for each other. It is a lot funnier than buying junk for each other. I think giving toys to other kids is a great idea. The challenge is teaching kids to be grateful for what they have and to enjoy giving the gifts.

Awsome to see, I do alot of volunteer work in Tooele If you would like to come out for a drive I could get something setup and even maybe a small tour. Be aware they are all very busy this time of year.

What exactly do you do for volunteer work out there? Looks like there could be some interest in maybe an unofficial RME volunteer day. What could you set us up with? It would have to be something that I could get my children involved with as well.
Thanks,
Josh.
