I say ya block the trail for any toy driver that starts with the letter S. I need a new place to play and your jeep is right about the right height.

you guys have a lot of free time in my opinion ! But When Im in Moab a 5 doesn't really seem that hard.
In Whitewater (way off subject I know) Everywhere it runs on a 1 to 5 scale except for in the grand canyon it's 1 to 10 because it can be so much crazier. I'm for going 1 to 5 and then if its way crazy give it a 6 or more. Also what is the moab scale based off ? Is it a stock jeep or what.

I think the trail rating system needs to be as objective as possible. I haven 't seen the criteria for the moab scale but I'm sure it exists somewhere. Someone should dig up the criteria for the moab ratings and use it as guidelines for voting for ratings in the other threads (i.e. constrictor and rattle snake). This should keep the rating as consistent as possible.

Well, but the people that go out to do the trail and happen on the sign are not going to have the detailed rating system in front of them. I think we are best off to go with a gut reaction of what we feel the trails rate, having a familiarity with Moab, and the ratings there, because that's the point of view people looking at the sign are going to have. Having trouble putting this idea into words here... The polls will give us a good idea of what people think the trails are, so the average guy that comes out, and sees the rating on the sign, should have a good idea what to expect.

why not a combination of ratings....

I really like the ski slope style of rating. The MTB trails I've been riding lately are all marked that way, and it is very easy to understand, even for someone who has never seen that style of rating system before.

The moab scale is very popular with the 4x4 crowd, but isn't well known to ATVs or hikers, or horses, or ????

You could have something like:

ski slope = Moab
green = 1 - 2
blue = 2+ - 3
black = 3+ - 4
double black = 4+ and above

it would be nice if the ski slope rating had an extra color or something.....

just thoughts

It exists... I can't find it on their website (www.rr4w.com) but I've seen it in the Newsletter that they send out every year. I'll see if I can find it.

Or (if the sign is not plasma cut) have the 1 Green, the 2 blue, three Black, and 4 with a start next to it and balck..

Just a thought.

This is the point I've been trying to make all along. We aren't the only ones using these areas; in fact we are more than likey the minority. The ski deal is very intuitive and more universally known. That's all.

First off, you don't make things very clear.
Secend off, if this is the case then you better include all the other users into this sign ie, ATV's, Snowmobiles, Boats etc. Then you better go back to the freeway type of sign to hold all the info you need to put on the board.

The sign is for the 4x4 crowd corect? I don't see signs for the ATV's that include info for the 4x4's...

Maybe there should be a central sign located at the parking lot that talks about the different ratings.

This WHOLE debate is becoming assinine (sp) and we keep going around in circles.

I know I mentioned that twice on the other thread, maybe around page twelve.........put up a poster on the Kiosk by the highway with all the ins and outs of trail ethics. But the sign should be succinct and concise. If someone has to read a 500 word essay to understand a trail rating system, with it's numerical ratings, plusses, minusses, point-five's (.5), and all that jazz, then we've picked the wrong scale.

I know I know! Let's call it the Shawn Scale! IF you can drive over a rock this tall, then you can run this trail! Just like at Lagoon for the roller coaster!
