On my way home today, I saw 7 trains between the UT/WY border and Echo. That's a lot of trains! All going the same direction. The coal train pleased me. :D

when I lived in Evanston at night the trains would go by about every 5 mins... if you look at the tracks in Evanston the train doesn't cross any major roads... just one that I can think of... the one going up to the airport... so they can just fly thru town! There is some major transportating going on the tracks!!!

 uh.... that's kind of what they're... for. :D

Lots of trains, yeah. Most of them go through Wamsutter too, I think. Plenty o' sirens. BP built a bridge over the tracks so no one would have to wait. CHA CHING

On average, one coal train makes UP $100,000 AFTER all costs are paid for; fuel, engine/car maint, track maint, multiple train crews pay, etc.

Hmmmm

Not bad, I think. ?

Saw a sweet IH truck on the rails, pulling a train flatbed. looked very strange.

How many coal trains did you see? They probably run 10 per day thru the Glenwood Canyon. 10 trains per day x $100,000 x 7 days a week. Thats $7,000,000 of pure profit in a week, just imagine how many other coal trains are running elsewhere. I'd say that's not bad.

You probably saw a Brandt truck... they are pretty neat. They get used a lot on the RR, usually for unloading/loading material. I had some pics of the one we were using out in the Mohave desert, but can't seem to find them! It was hooked to a train flat car which held a massive generator, then 2 old train passenger cars behind it. The generator powered the lights in the passenger cars. We used it to get out to our work location and would ride it each morning and evening, about 30 miles from our job briefing. It was nothing but desert and when you need to move 60 men quickly, the normal buses weren't going to cut it. My job was to protect the point on the reverse move... go to the end car, verify the track was clear and communicate that to the Brandt truck driver so he could back up safely. It was fun, wish I knew where those pics were.

Found some info and pics on the 'net about the Brandt trucks... notice the massive train knuckle on the front of the truck.
