Transmission problems

So this weekend in Moab my transmission was popping out of gear. What its doing is making a whining noise and then, 'POP' and I'm out of gear. It happened in 2-Hi and 4-Low in both first and second.
But wait, thats not all! The second time this happened the whining noise stayed even after I got it back in gear. But then it went away when I was making a sharp left and my right tire spun, then the noise went away.
I'm sure that the transmission need to be rebuilt, but what I'm more wondering about is why would the noise go away with tire spin? Could there be potential binding somewhere that might be causing this? Thoughts?

Yes Samurai, I should have mentioned that.
And no, I haven't checked that. Would that being out of adjustment cause the whining noise though?

Probably not, but have you checked the oil? Yes this mean manual labor is involved

Yeah, topped it off before I left for the weekend and was still full after I got home.

It defiantly needs to be changed. A little gray, can't say that I remember it being gritty.

It's a little plastic part that goes in where the shifter is....call it a shifter bushing, but Suzuki calls it a "sheet" for some reason.

I would think that if it didn't shift solidly. It has no problem shifting, it was just popping out of gear. And only in the dirt, never on the highway.

Makes me wonder if there is some offroad torque going on that is causing it. Are all the bolts tight (ie connecting transmission to engine etc), broken transmission or engine mounts?

The bolts to the block are fine, and the rear mount seems fine, but I haven't done anything other than just push on it with my hand. I need to get under there and really take a look.
As for engine mounts, hadn't thought of that. I'll look at those too.

Take a pry bar and see if you can lift up on the engine/tranny. The mounts might look good, but if you can lift up on it, that might make the shifter bind then pop. It is also posible you have two different problems. Maybe you have a diff. problem causing the whine. Then when the wheel spun free it "fixed" itself, for a moment.
