Yeah buy a GC so that you can deal with bent Uni-bodies, cheesy leather interiors, cheap plastic dash and door panels, and D-35's or aluminum 44's, and good luck trying to seat two car seats and three kids in a GC, oh and have fun dealing with trying to lift it with having increased interior noise and vibration.

But yeah buy domestic, they are soooo much better.

Holy 'Attack of the Range Rover clones,' Batman!

OK, so I might just regret selling the YJ :(

If you were going to build another rig that had to be a DD, and were going to do trails up to a 4+ or 5 rating, would you get a YJ or a XJ?

What year XJ?

Now I just need to find a way of selling the Rover, for some reason rolling it kills the resale value.

Out of curiosity, what were the biggest compaints other LR owners had about their vehicles? (I think that I have a pretty good idea)

I heard about the auto trannys having problems. I was looking at a Range Rover...

Everyone has their down days! :p

Look back at what houndoc wants in a rig- YJ and XJ or WJ doesn't fit the critera.

Really?

I thought that you were going to say that the headgaskets leaked oil, or the ABS sensors go bad.

But I have NEVER seen a ZF-22 tranny go bad, even with 300K.

The manual trans have issues, but the auto is bomb proof!

That really suprises me that someone had problems with the tranny.

I agree with you there. Seems to me a 4Runner is the ideal choice for him.

This has been fun!

Next time lets choose a topic where I am not the only one defending a brand! :D

Dude I own an old HIGH mileage Land Rover!

I am sorry that I get defensive, but I am sick of always hearing about how unreliable the LR is. Yes they have their quirks, but show me a rig that doesn't. As for part pricing, the cost of LR parts has come down recently because there is a growing aftermarket to compete with factory parts, I would say that part pricing is similar to Mitsubishi, Subaru, Infiniti, and a few other import vehicles.

Out of curiosity, what were the biggest compaints other LR owners had about their vehicles? (I think that I have a pretty good idea)

My uncle has owned 2 Range Rovers within the last couple of Years, and each time he had nothing but problems with Electrical stuff. And these were not Old Range Rovers these were Brand New High End Range Rovers. Each time he traded in. The first time he Traded it in for a BMW X5 and the second time he traded it in for a BMW 6 series. Personally if I could afford a Range/Land Rover I wouldn't purchase it. I have heard to many problems about them. And Pokey I understand that you are defending the Range Rover but I think if you would have got rid of that Range Rover and got a Jeep like you talked about doing a few months ago then you would be ripping the Rover's and sticking up for Jeep your just defending what you Drive.

Now we got the discussion going. I wondered what feelings would get stirred up. Nothing like passion!

I have looked at the 4runner- fits the bill in most ways just boring- style and colors. May have to live with that.

To drive, the monterro is great. But I am concerned about departure angle. Seems like could be a problem.

The disco has been my favorite to drive, but poor gas milage is a concern and there is certainly mixed quality info out there.

CG? Not a bad choice of course.

The input has been great. Now I just need to sell my Jeep so I can buy something....

By the way, the defender of the LR sounds like a salesman. True? If so, where and I may have to come over.

Maybe I missed it but did you have a price range? You can wait for the new Grand or the new Disco (think they are calling it the LS or somthing simular) and pay $30-$40K. The 4 runners are good but underpowered in the older version. The new ones have a nice 6 and a good V8 but are spendy. If price no not an issue try a 1996-current Land Cruiser. They came with front and rear factory lockers for a few years. They can carry 7 people, got toyota quality but still suffer from not enough power for the bulk.

I am thinking I will end up spending $25-35k. Since I drive 90 miles a day on my commute, I am stuck with going new or low mile used for now, but what ever I get I hope to eventually "retire" from daily duty and keep for the real fun stuff. Thus the intensive search.

I am curious about the new disco, the web site calls it an LR3. The new GC has more room- big plus, but ground clearance drops a full 3/4 inch. Bad.

If your going to drive it daily then turn it into a trail rig I suggest a 99-04 grand cherokee. They make good daily drivers and can be ok up to 2 kids. the 4.7 V8 is a nice motor and it can be had with f/r hydrolic limited slips. The kicker is that they are easily modified for off road duty when you get to that point. I don't think anyone can dispute that the aftermarket supports jeeps more than any brand out there.

What do you want to know about the LR3?

If I had a choice I would choose an 04 Disco before the LR3, mostly because the LR3 is going to be fully independant suspension and there for not easily modified.

No I am not a sales person, I work in service at Land Rover Centerville. Just fairly passionate about the brand.

west jordan,
bleed green baby! go pokey. I had the opportunity to take an 04 disco down to moab a few months ago. it worked very well. fuel economy was consistant over varying speeds. we drove gemini bridges and pritchett arch and it was great. the traction control and the diff lock (only availiable on the 04) were awsome. i know that those trails aren't super tough, but they are moderate and the disco was stock. another thing to remember is that modifying your land rover does not void your warranty. I'm not sure if the other brands have that same benefit. sure, rovers have had some issues but the 04 disco so far is awesome. solid front and rear axles, disc brakes front and rear, and all the interior goodies (don't forget the dvd player). i am a little biased as well. i work at land rover AF. i also own a range rover. BLEEEEEEEED GREEEEEEEEEEEEN :D   :p

4Runners can be boaring, but find one with a factory E-Locker. Then, a 'boaring' rig becomes a 'Sleeper' rig.

One other vehicle you may want to consider is a Toyota Land Cruiser. They can be had with E-Lockers F & R, do have Coils all around & can seat plenty of people... I think some have Jump Seats in the back?
