Vintage Jeeps

Vintage Jeeps\old iron

So, I've been kinda toying with the idea of starting a vintage Jeep club, or possibly a vintage 4x4 in general club. I belonged to a Vintage Jeep club in TN, and it was a lot of fun. We did shows and outings (think Relic Run style but on a smaller scale) on a monthly basis. Just kinda wondered if there would be much interest in something like this? Let me know whatcha think. I know that this forum is geared more to the hardcore side of wheeling, but there are a lot of folks here that like the old school too.
Thanks!

I think it'd be cool. I had a similar idea, like an old-iron club or something. Would be fun to go on runs with other guys who understand the fun/challenge of running and maintaining an older vehicle.

There is a military collectors club here in Utah that would likely be a good point of contact for a Jeep specific club. If your considering a general old-4x4 club I'd be interested in helping out too.

PS, Steve did not pioneer the Old Iron 4x4 club idea, that was most definitely something I mentioned to him like many others. I'm going to have him sign a privacy disclosure and non-compete just to talk to him in the future ;)

How old does a jeep need to be to be considered vintage. I'm very interested if '70 is vintage. I use to do the extreme stuff but have gotten away from it.

I'm already a member of it, have been for about 5 years, and while they may be in for the shows, I don't know how many would be in for the wheeling, most of them are pretty old guys. And not that old guys can't wheel, they just don't strike me as the type.
I'll certainly open it up to them if I do anything, but most likely it'll just be old iron in general. If love to have your help though, you have a lot more experience than me for sure!

So what would be the mission of said club? Car club that goes 4-wheeling occasionally or a 4-wheeling club that does car shows on occasion?

Hmmm... I'd say more trail runs, with a smattering of shows, but that's just me. Mostly I'd love to see more of an organized awareness building of the vintage 4x4 world. Think how few are exhibited at the shows, and what a comparatively small following they have than say, muscle cars or hotrods? I'd like to see that change.

The problem is you build a hot rod and you keep it clean and drive it on Sundays. You build a retro 4x4, take it wheeling and destroy hard to find parts and are sheet metal :D

I'm on board though...

If a 1980 CJ is a qualifier then I would be very interested in this idea. Old iron afficionados (sp?) need to band together as they are a strange bunch, if not only to trade knowledge on how to keep their old p.o.s. vehicles in parts and running.

I don't see any reason an '80 wouldn't qualify, I don't know what the cut off would be at this point, but probably around that.

Yeah Kurt, I know how most hot rodders are, I've played that game for a long time, but I'm not talking about beating old rigs, I'm talking about using them for what they were designed for. Most of them are built stronger than modern rigs come from the factory. Keep in mind that a lot of people put thousands into rare vintage cars, then go out and race them in the SCCA as well.

I'm doing it backwards. The vintage stuff rarely leaves the garage, and I beat the snot out of my nice new stuff..
