The good old VP44 bit the dust yesterday... Borrowed a code scanner today and confirmed it. Not too bad for over 200k on an original injector pump, I guess. :ugh: Thanks to I Lean I was able to get back home last night! :D

So, anybody have recommendations on where to order a new one? This is gonna hurt.

Industrial injection rebuilds alot of them. I had a bad experience with them though when I had them do some work for me.

Did you get the upgraded version or stock?

-edit: or is all they offer the upgrade? Looks like good setup.
upgraded, worth every penny. The owner was great to work with.

It was cheaper (and better) then buying one from the local cummins dealer. Took about 4 hrs to swap. He also offers a simple idiot light to prevent this in the future. It comes on when the fuel pressure from the lift pump dips below 5 psi.

Call and talk to him. The man knows his ****.

Herzog to you have the stock style lift pump? And do you know why it failed aside from old age? I'm super paranoid that mine will go soon as I don't know the history on it.

When I did mine I went with these guys.

I can't recomend these guy's yet, but I plan on getting mine from them when the time comes.

I have a stock lift pump but it's relocated down on the frame. I was getting a dead peddle over a year ago so that's why I replaced it and relocated it. I'm pretty sure the damage was probably done to the VP44 and it just happened to last over another year.

But really, who knows with these stupid pumps anymore.

Goff is a good shop, but I got my pump online for just over $900! Not too bad to R&R either... Runs like a champ now! Put in the Air Dog 165 at the same time... Got the Air Dog and the VP44 for just over $1400. PM me or call if'n you want some details.:)

So what did you end up doing? If you've already replaced it did you replace it yourself and how big of a pain was it?

Nothing yet... I have way too many projects on my hands. I'll probably get to it in a week or two.

From what I can see, it looks like it will be pretty easy. I'll just need to source the gear puller.

I don't know if it's like a first gen, I suspect it is though just a taperd shaft in the gear that's keyed. On mine I just took a piece of flat bar and drilled two holes to line up with the threaded holes in the gear and just got some long bolts and threaded it down until it popped off. The fb press against the front of the shaft. I had the engine out and the front cover off though.

Though I've never changed a VP44 I do know it is very similar to the first gens. There is a very detailed teardown and install on Youtube as well.

I've always heard that is is very important to keep an eye on the woodruff key and make sure you don't drop it when pulling the gear off. If that happens it will fall into the oil pan :ugh:

Make sure the key is at the 12:00 position when you pull the gear. Also, the puller that sixb describes would work perfect. The Snap-On version is just a round disc with two holes in it for the bolts...

When I did mine, bluechip just loaned me the tool. Its was the same tool you speak of.
