My dad would be clear, since his diesel operated rigs are never on teh roads. Unless he's moving them from field to field or back to the shop for repair... So he already doesn't pay taxes for that reason. But it just seems like it would be illegal somewhere because the taxes are what pays for the roads - no taxes means higher taxes elsewhere. I guess I just can't believe the government hasn't stepped in yet....
The Utah legislature has been considering taxing by the mile using gps. A year ago I read about it and sent a letter to the legislator Sheldon Kilpack who had the brilliant idea to tax by the mile. My letter said that it was a bad idea and included several other tax methods, mostly a flat tax. Here is his reply.
"If vehicles no longer use petroleum and there is a wide array of fuel
types, how do you suggest roads will be funded? The very basics of a
strong and vibrant economy is solid infrastructure for transportation to
move goods and people.
1. This tax is not an additional tax. It is a tax in leu of a gas tax.
2. We are looking at several ways to fund transportation. This is one
of several and only one that the press chose to cover.
3. No one is suggesting implementing this tax in the near future.
Oregon is running a pilot program we are interested in seeing the
results of.
I appreciate your input and hope you understand we are looking at
several ways to fund transportation as the gas tax is proving very
inefficient. The future of transportation will definitely be different
than it is today and we need to look ahead so we aren't accused of being
short sighted.
