So is the diy carport a kit from somewhere? Or did you design it yourself and just buy a bunch of steel to weld together? I'm in the market for a shop myself and I've been researching options.

I finally got around to building an over head shelf in my garage. I built the frame out of unistrut, and sheeted it with MDF.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.

It’s my own design. We looked at buying a kit but the prices are insane. The best deal we found was a 30x40 four post for $36k. Just a roof. No walls. It was I beam and the four corner posts would be nice to have. Mine is 9 posts. Material was $12k but we spent way more than we needed to on the corrugated sheet roof that matches the corrugated roofing on the property already.

Spring time means hard work and yard work!

First project is widening the driveway by 5', it gets tight backing a trailer in with that turn. Had my neighbor come by with his small Kubota tractor, peel up the sod and I dug up the old concrete curb, relocated 2 sprinklers and leveled it out. Need to lay the new curb next to the grass, but couldn't find the right edge stone.

Next up, road base then have some hot mix asphalt delivered and DIY the work! I have another much larger gravel area next to the shop I want to asphalt as well.

The next project has been in the works for years, I wanted less grass to mow and water, so I killed off the grass and plugged the sprinkler lines. It's been bare dirt for about 5 yrs now, growing weeks, looking like crap. This is where my Model T body sits, so I moved it out of the way, cleared any weeds, leveled it out and laid down "weed block" .... or, roofing tar paper. I've been less than impressed with actual weed block, so we're going all the way with tar paper!

The plan is to lay down 2-4" river rock, put the Model T body back in place and build a walking path since I cut thru there getting to and from the shop.

4x4 stuff is cool and all, but when my 80 year old Dad can no longer lift bags of chicken feed and needs a grain dispenser, all other projects go on hold. 😂 The end result could certainly be fancier, but nearly all the materials were already here in the shop. 🤷‍♂️

I'm really not excited for all the caulking I'm going to be doing! And finish carpentry in general is proving to be quite time consuming.

Nicely done...
For any particle board/MDF shelf that needs to support much weight, add a front, vertical apron to stiffen the front edge because it will sag over time.

In the past I have covered the tops of shelves with countertop laminate. Super easy to clean and nearly indestructible.

Super big tip here...

for caulking and keeping it looking sharp, get some disposable cake decorating icing bags and a small round metal tip.
Pump some caulk into the bag and the caulk goes exactly where you want it, only as much as you want, and stops flowing the very second you stop squeezing on the bag.

I have been continuing trying to decide how much project creep I want to allow from the stupid termites.

I ripped out the ceiling outside the bathroom to get the joists in place...this led to tearing out some more drywall....oh while I am at it I may as well widen this entry to the family room.....this entails moving a bedroom door 12" back and move a light switch. Added a new post right at the bottom of the stairs, doubled up a 2x6 stud that was just inside the old post.....now i get to drywall the stairs and new ceiling and all that before tackling the now demo'd out bathroom. I also have to figure out what to do with the hole in the carpet until we get new carpet. 🤦‍♂️ 20220327_141955.jpg20220328_194456.jpg

Started ripping up tile - This is going to suck. I got the LVP sitting in the garage, but gotta rip all this up, and then get it all cleaned up before I can start that.

I can't imagine that is concrete underneath - I have a crawlspace in this house, I cant imagine they laid concrete down on top of wood. I will scrape down to that surface (pictured below) and call it good. Pray for me.

Looking to replace that rear door also - seems like we got some water damage, and I know it doesn't seal well.

I hope you do a build thread. I’ve been shop shopping for a while now, all the options seem over priced. Seems like I could build one like VersaTube for half what they charge or less. Anxious to see what you came up with
