what hand guards do I get

I have Cycra probend handguards and really like them. They are pretty beefy, thick aluminum bars with nice thick molded plastic guards. I ride a fairly heavy KTM 525 and it seams like I drop it a few times every time I ride. Last Saturday I dropped it several times hard on rocks on the Hanging Tree trail with Steve and they came out with barely a scratch.

I know Caleb had some nice handguards but can't remember who made them.

Caleb had Highway Dirtbikes hand guards, they are hands down the best and beefiest you can possibly buy. I've ridden with the guy that makes them and he's a great guy. The hand guards aren't cheap, but they will be the last set you'll ever buy. I had them on my DR650, have them on my WR450 and will eventually have them on my KTM 690.

This! If you want the best, HDB. If you want the cheapest (but still a good hand guard), get a set of the Tusk D-Flex. I can save you a few bucks on the D-Flex if you go that route.

FWIW, one of the very first things I buy on any of my bikes is the HDB guards.

Do you guys have the mirrors with those? How do they work? I like the flippy aspect of them but not sure how they would work at decent speeds

I had them on my DR650 and they worked fine at speed. They are located with a bolt that you can snug up pretty good. They will still move, but they're stiff. I liked them, very unobtrusive mirrors that you can tuck away when riding in the dirt.

Ive ran the Tusk D-flex on my last three bike, I love them, i dont think you can break them and they have saved me from broken hands, that said make sure your levers are set at the right level, Im a tall rider, and I have to peg ride a lot because Ive broken my tail bone a couple times (artiritis) I used to rotate my levers down, last year I crashed out in St. George and got my wrist trapped between the lever and the gaurd and went over the bars then the bike flipped over me with my hand still trapped in the gaurd resulting is all the tendons torn in my wrist. they make gaurds that will let your hand out, but I would just make sure your levers are turned up enough that it wont happen.

Ouch!! I haven't done that myself, but I'm sure it's painful!

Check out Greg's DR650 thread here for some good pictures of the Highway Dirtbike guards. You can see how Greg has added the computer mount, switches, LEDs, and mirrors to his. The mirror works great for what it is. I've never seen a mirror on a dirtbike that was great besides the huge OEM mirrors. These mirrors do their job at letting you see behind you while they're out and they tuck away very nicely.

I have Acerbis on my WR. The Tusk are pretty much identical but I am ready for a new set and I will replace them with the Tusk. The Acerbis are not worth the extra money. Tracy probably spends more time in the saddle than all of us and he runs the Tusk.

Agree completely, the Acerbis are pretty much identical to the Tusk. I had the Acerbis on my CRF when I first bought it. My biggest (only) gripe was I wrecked once and due to their design, it caused my throttle tube to get wedged by the guard so I ended up having to turn around and cut my day short. The Tusk guards will keep your hands and knuckles from getting busted by branches, but if you wreck, it's still very easy to bend a bar with them. The Highway dirtbikes, because they tie in to your top clamp, make it near impossible to bend your bars in a wreck.

Those HDB ones seem really nice.

Is there a guard that is between the Tusk and HDB ones as far as strength/price combo?
There are tons of different styles out there but my opinion is if you aren't going to spend me money for the HDB guards, then get the tusk d-flex guards.

I like the Acerbis Rally (full polypropylene/No metal) the best. They don't bend and I personally have not seen a pair break before. I have mangled and/or broke the aluminum style guards more times than I can count and lately its starting to get irritating--Maybe I should stop dumping the bike? lol :D Just last weekend I had to remove one completely just to get my brake to work. If I had to buy the aluminum guards again it would be Tusk D'flex without a doubt. They are just as strong and protective as the Cycras (I have both) and cost much less.

Looks like they have re-styled them a bit but here is the type I was talking about:

I met a guy up AF canyon last week riding a tricked out xr400. He had all the HDB gear' guards, switches, speedo billet guard and LED turn signals. It was the slickest setup I have ever seen. I'll definitely being spending some money with them. The rear LED turn signals were super cool. They are almost invisible from the side and looked pretty indestructible.
