The F150 isn't working out for me, I'm thinking about listing it and going looking for the bricknose F250 I wanted in the first place. Once I find one, I'll need to start looking for a 3rd truck for gallivanting because the F250 will be just too big for what I do. I'd like to start watching prices and getting a feel for the market, but I don't know what I want.

Ideally, it will be a DD, family hauler, and backroad camping rig/mild wheeler. Important factors for me are reliability, 4wd with low range, room for four plus day trip gear, power to tow a small trailer and maintain speed in the passes, and it really needs to be under $5000 because I'd be paying cash. I REALLY want a 60 series Landcruiser, but I'm worried about the 3F making enough grunt to move my circus around the countryside at better than snails pace. I'd consider an 80 but I hear they're underpowered too, and one in my budget would probably be trashed. A 100 series LC or 4th/5th gen 4Runner would be ideal but outside the budget. A 2nd gen 4Runner is underpowered and probably a touch too small. A JKU would be great but I couldn't handle the price tag - maybe a TJ or LJ, but I'd be worried about room in the back seat for boys + cargo. A DC Taco costs way too much for what it is, we already have a 3rd gen 4Runner and I don't want another, Grand Cherokees don't do it for me (ditto the Landrover) and I have the same concerns about an XJ as I do about the 2nd gen 4Runner. Suburban or Tahoe or Expedition, too big. Bronco or K5, same story. Explorer, been there done that. The boys would hate the back seat of an FJ Cruiser. I think an Xterra is probably too small, and I don't want to drive a Nissan anyway, and now I think I've ruled out almost everything.

Did I just talk myself into a Trooper?

If you aren't anti-dodge, I'd suggest a 2000'ish dodge Durango or Dakota, with the 5.9 Magnum. You'll get about 13 mpg but it meets all your requirements. You can sacrifice some power for a little better mileage with the 318 (4.7? I think) but I'd still go 5.9 if it were me. But then again, I'm anti dodge.

What's not working out with the F-150? If it's just not cutting it for utility use could you keep it for your play vehicle? How about an expedition? Jeeper got one last year and loves it. A full size Monty would likely be big enough but I have no idea about power or cost of them.

I looked at the Dakota before I bought the F150. Guys on the board kinda scared me off it. Ditto for the Durango. I'd get another second gen Explorer first I think.

A TJ or LJ is just as if not smaller than an Xterra and XJ...

Yah, they all get kinda small when you're talking four bodies plus gear. I already have a tiny 4WD to pack the family into when I want to make them play sardine. :D

Lots of little things, but mostly it's just too big. A Montero might work, but the cargo area in Steve's looked a little small when I saw it last. I'd have to have another look.

So Jo, Ut
We had an XJ for a while. The 4.0 seemed to have enough power for me. We fit 3 kids in carseats in the back. We had a roof rack, but really only used it for the spare. Everything else fit in the back. We will buy another XJ if we ever want a dedicated offroader again.

I think you should trade me my 4runner for Clara plus cash. V8, leather, 7000 tow capacity, hill decent, 10 speaker JBL with sub, small lift, absolutely amazing rig (that unfortunately can't be flat towed or I'd be keeping it :()

The cargo area in my montero was awesome. I just didn't like all the little electrical gremlins mine had. I really enjoyed that rig aside from those worries.

Props to you for paying cash, I really respect that.

I think you could get away with a tahoe. I imagine they're not much bigger than a 100 series.

Maybe a suzuki XL7? I think a suburban would be a cool backcountry rig. TONS of room, and they're pretty dang reliable (but they ARE big).

4.7 Sequoia/thread.

I love mine. 223K and no issues at all. Toytec Ultimate lift, 285s, "could" tow my buggy. Regeared to 4.88s, and just got 18.5mpg driving it to Pagosa Springs and back a few weeks ago. I pull my drift boat with it, and its my wife's DD. This is legit mileage, not some BS. We average around 14.5 in mixed use with it now that we regeared. I pulled my drift boat to Montana and back a couple months ago with a full load of gear in it and got 13.5 towing up. I cannot say enough what a great vehicle it has been. Just make sure the timing belt has been done.

I'm not sure how helpful I can be without seeing a price range (edit: just saw the $5k) but I assume if a 20 year old 4 cylinder Toyota is on the list you could also probably get a 10 year old Durango with the Hemi...? They're probably the same price ;)

I think you should just get three Samurais.

I can't do that for the same reason I can't just drive the 3rd gen whenever I want. It ain't my truck. :)

I dont think you can go wrong 2003-2009 4runner with the 2uz V8

I agree. I might need to wait until I can up my budget, I think a v8 4Runner would be perfect for me right now. I wouldn't mind a Tundra or Sequoia either, but it gets back to size. Just too big for where I wanna drive.

Do it! :D Every time I start to think my truck is too large the idea of a 1st gen Tundra pops into my head. But then again that's a compromise in some ways as well.. Meh, It's scenic enough out there you don't have to take the hardest trails haha.
