What would be your 'guilty pleasure' 4WD vehicle?

Put a DVD player in the Rubi...with the top on.

The LC has a cool factor, and is certainly worthy. I've recently experienced both and I guess I put them both in the same category since I have a different LuxoRide that I choose not to wheel. To me they're about the same size and for similar use.

Last summer I reserved the rental 4dr with the intention of getting the soft top, and got the hard top instead. SOOOO glad I did. We did the White Rim trail in comfort and style...and with a DVD player (the kids have a portable one) plugged in to the stereo. As much as I love LC's, when I compare the JK to my aunt's '91 Land Cruiser (still for sale http://www.rockymountainextreme.com/showthread.php?t=46654), including ride and power (and Rubi package), the only reason I'd do the LC would be for the 2 extra seats.

That's just me though. YMMV and since this is Guilty Pleasures and completely subjective, there is no right answer. Having both wouldn't suck.

What about this for an idea.

Of course I'm kinda biased!

1st Generation 4Runner.

I personally would want IFS, so maybe a Total Chaos front suspension, OME rear..

Remove the factory fiberglass top, build the most awesome custom pop top shell for it with upper bunk sleeping.....full kitchen....all the goodies. Leave the back seats in place (they fold down really flat.)

TRD e-locker, 32-33" Bighorns, bumpers, winch, all around armor.

Snorkel

Rear tire carrier with capability for 2 tires, gas/water etc etc

GPS navigation

front seats out of a newer 4runner

Extra.....water.....gas AND Propane under the rig.

Now you have the ultimate.....one of a kind.....small footprint.....5 seater exploration vehicle!

Alternative to the custom top would be a roof top tent.. but a custom top would be sweet.

hey if you want an IFS 4runner my 87 4runner needs to sell with a bad motor.

my ideal vehicle, the 78 blazer i just picked up once i finish building it. stock for now besides a rear locker but plans:
4" lift
1 ton axles, d60 front and 14 bolt ff rear
cummins 4bt or the (released in either 09 or 2010) 4.5L duramax
either a manual 6 speed or an allison
selectable lockers front/rear
soft top and half doors, could care less about ac
trail armor and a swing out spare tire carrier

A 3 seater super light buggy, all aluminum ls7, hi-9's, coils and dimple die holes everywhere. I would paint the cage to look like cherry wood and have wood grain sides to match.

How about a 4 wheel drive chevy van instead of a suburban? One of the ones with the top you can stand up in and kitchen facilities. I saw one on the beach down at San Felipe and thought it was cool.

Well I have already aquired mine and as time goes on I will make it my dream, do it all rig. It is a 1990 Burban, it is very simple vehicle to work on, it has 350TBI, TH700R4 and NP241. So I have the benefit of overdrive and low first gear 3.07 plus tcase is at 2.72.1. It is locked front and rear, bumpers, sliders already done. Future plans are to replace tired old engine that has 190000 miles on it, get the TBI system dialed in so it works decent, do a KluneV 4.1 splitter between tranny and tcase, cut fenders and toss some 37's underneath it. I was told by my good friend JR Ehley that this rig has about 38" or better as far as the wheel travel goes and yes I did purchase JR's old burb. Fuel mileage is not great but your brand new H2 Hummer gets like 9mpg so Burb has got it beat, cheap to insure and register and in two more years it will be smog exempt. Sorry about the long post but I will hold onto this one for a long while.

For a rockcrawler i'd have my TJ, ofcoarse it would have to be stretched with D60;s and atleast 37's
but for a general exploration vehicle id take a Xterra with an SAS, selectible lockers, snorkel, 35's, bumpers, sliders, rebuilt engine with performance parts and an aftermarket S/C, full cage, maby even an offroad trailer and a bunch of other goodies

Because I'm a glutton for punishment, I'm actually going to post mine:
Currently I've been craving a Daihatsu Rocky. Don't know why, but I think with a Toyota axle swap in the front it would be pretty cool.
For a more realistic vehicle, I'm really digging on the four door TRD Tacoma's. And since Suzuki is never going to bring back the Jimny eventually I will have to settle for something more modern than my '86 Sami, and the Taco looks better by the day.

Man, that's hardcore. I've been afraid to admit that I actually have one. It's only got 70k on it... runs like a top. What is it about it that you think would be good?

Not to get side tracked but how is JR these days? I have not seen him since OLM down sized and laid him off.

You do realize that by answering your question I am opening not just myself, but also you, to unbelievable levels of textual abuse from the likes of Cody. :cody:
I'm not really sure, as may people on here can attest my brain is wired a bit differently (I blame my father, who is undoubtably lurking about and reading this post). I've always liked small, strange cars that have achieved some level of cult status. The Rocky just has a tough look about it (in my mind) and it has a wonderful reputation of being durable in Australia. The only downsides are that its got IFS and here in the states there is virtually no aftermarket support. What I always liked/envisioned was a Rocky with a Toyota axle under the front end and a couple inches of lift and an ARB bullbar out front and all the associated mods that go with that. It would just be kind of different, and thats what I like. If you're looking to sell yours, shoot me a PM.:D

JR is doing good. He is in construction these days. He also just aquired a 2007Chevy 2500 with Duramax so he is a happy camper. I am always pestering him and talking him into helping me out with the stuff. What a great guy. Always willing to help. Also Doug is over at the TeraFlex these days.

For the other two fellas, there is a built Daihatsu Rocky on Marlin Crawler forum board. I believe that guy swaped both axles for toyota units, he is running toyota 2.7 4cyl engine and also toyota tranny and dual tcase setup. Thing looks sweet, one of those trucks that are very hard to see and unique.
