Ate there tonight... good food, horrible service.

Amen to that. Two years ago, I had a group of about fourteen people and the "hostess" tried to seat us on two of the tables that would maybe fit eight people. When I brought this to her attention she rudely told me that I could move a table over from another location. Being tired and hungry from a long day this was not really a wise thing for her to say. :mad2: Obviously I was pissed and told her that she could move the damn table and asked to speak to the manager who was very appologetic and provided free appetizers for the group.

I don't go there as much as I used to good food or not.

I haven't been in Utah for 3 years.
The only place I truly miss is Cafe Rio.

Specifically: Pork Barbaco Burrito, enchilata style.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Out here, we eat at Primanti Bros at least once a week, and Five Guys (A greasy in-n-out burger) every other week.

My brother and his wife moved to Long Beach ~4 years ago, and nothing gives me more pleasure than to give him a call while I'm waiting in line at Cafe Rio and ask him to guess where I am. :greg:

That how I fealt each time I talked to a friend that was in the Jack in the Box drive thru!! I love that place... And the way I feel about Article Circle... Go to Utah to get AC, move away to get JB... I told my wife she should open a JB in SLC... But no matter what you do there, you still work at a JB! lol

Great thread. I'm always looking for good restaurants around here. I've been very dissapointed. I haven't been to a place in Utah with great service. It doesn't seem to be important here.

I'll have to check out some of the places mentioned, but here's my list from Utah County:

Daley Freeze in Payson - Best burgers and fries around
Art City Trolley in Springville
Lon's Cookin' Shack in Provo - Best barbeque (real barbeque, not just something cooked over a flame) I've found in Utah

Dem's some good burgers.... If you can avoid it, never poke meat with a fork or temp thingie to determine if they are done - and absolutely NEVER cut it open with a knife!! These things release the juices and cause them to dry out!

While it's cooking, take the backside of your fork or flipper and push down on the center of the meat. You can tell how done it is by how spongy it feels. Once you get that done to a science, you can cook any kind of beef anyway anyone wants it. My wife likes hers a little raw. I like mine perfect (medium). And my dad likes his just before it turns to jerkey. I can cook up several steaks and with my touchy feely, I can get everyones perfect. While on the topic of steaks, it is ok to turn them 15 times, too ;) While I don't... I put them on the lower rack for a minute a side, then on the upper rack for 4 minutes a side. While the BBQer is on high, this method will get you a good medium steak. The ONLY steak to bbq is a rib eye :D Damn... I'm getting pretty darn hungry... :D ...I do some kick butt steaks, too... Way better than what you will find in ANY restaurant. I can also have them on the table in less than 10 minutes. Let's see any steakhouse do that! If you like that burger recipe, get with me and I'll give you my steak recipe...

I think it's just a 'now-a-days' thing... Nobody cares about providing good customer service anymore...

Give the Sugarhouse BBQ place a try... I think they are around 21 s and 9 e, in SLC. I found them from the rib cook off thingie a few years back. Best ribs at the cook off thingie....

You want a good slab of ribs? Head over to John Escauges (sp) Nugget in Reno for the best in the west rib cook off every year. Now that's some good ribs!!! The little po dunks that have no clue don't attend. So all you have is a bunch of the big dogs that know how cooking ribs is supposed to be done. Back Forty Texas Barbeque is one of my alltime faves....

......Damn, I am getting sooooo hungry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not so sure. One of the things I look forward to when travelling on business is to go to good restaurants and get good service.

My "theory" is that Utah doesn't have a built-in base of professional waiters and waitresses for whatever reason. I rarely see an older (35+) person working on the wait staff in a restaurant. It seems that working in the service industry here is primarily a career step and rarely a career choice, much more so than other markets. You get younger people who don't know what it means to be a service professional. When I go to Dallas, visiting all my family is second on my list. Hitting the restaurants is always the number one priority. It's such a different dining experience. The wait staff are friendly, prompt, and very professional in most places. Part of it has to do with the people in general, but I think the idea of having actual professional servers is a big component. Just some ramblings on the subject. I could go on and on, but I'll give everyone a break.

......Damn, I am getting sooooo hungry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No doubt!!

I told my wife she should open a JB in SLC...

They used to be here years ago. The Sconecutter down by Discount Tire in south Orem? Started out as a JITB. But apparently a couple of them gave a bunch of people food poisoning so people stopped going there and they closed up shop. I think a lot of people here have a negative mentallity of JITB. When I lived in SoCal for a couple years, it took probably a year for me to eat there. I don't mind them, but it's nothing like In-N-Out where I absolutely have to stop in any time I'm past St. George. :greg:

Seth

These go to 11
BBQ- Pat's off 21st
Thai- Thai Garden, 45th and 9th
Mex- Red Iguana
Sushi- Go Sushi 33rd
Italian- Michelangelo's 11th & 21st
Pizza- Pie
Wings- TWC at Trolly Square
Burger- Cotton Bottom

I am sure I have a few more. We went to Napa valley this past weekend and made sure to stop at the In-N-Out both in and out. That is one thing I am kinda glad I have to travel for. Other wise I would be way off my diet.

I got food poisoning from them long time ago - 89ish? and it took me a while before I went back. But man, am I glad I did! My wife hated JITB from the islands, where she said they sucked BAD! She was going to school and working full time and I brought her JITB burger. She loved it, and asked where it was from. I told her and she didn't believe me. SO I showed her the wrapper, cup, reciept, etc. She still didn't believe me and demanded that I take her to one. Now she's hooked.... Sour dough Jacks! :greg:

Oh yea... Double double animal style, baby!!! It's the only burger place that I know of... That ONLY does burgers! No fish, no chicken... Just burgers, cokes, shakes and fries - that's it! I don't care for their fry's, though... I guess I need more preservatives or something ;)

I've been experimenting and came up with a pretty close recipe to Cafe Rio for their pork.

Take about a 3-3.5 lb pork roast and cook in a crock pot by seasoning with salt, pepper and garlic.
When done drain off all the grease and remove the excess fat.
Add 2-3 cups of room temperature Dr. Pepper, one large can of green chilli enchilada sauce and about 1 to 1-1/2 cups of brown sugar(whatever tastes best to you).
Simmer for one hour or until meat is heated back to eating temp.
Serve however you want(taco style, burrito style, salad).

It doesn't look exactly like Cafe Rio because the color is different but the taste is pretty much right on the money and really good.
If you've never had Cafe Rio and wonder why everyone likes their pork so much try this out and you'll know why. Top with cilantro, fresh salsa and shredded romain lettuce on a fried tortilla for a great taco.

That is all.
