Which rig next for sixstring

Too bad JK's are still out of budget for you, probably still out of budget for me. I pay way too much every month for mine for what I do to it.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone wheel that new of a rig as hard as you do. Not saying you're specifically hard on your jeep, just that you definitely use your armor haha.

I enjoyed driving a 1998 4 Runner my company used to have in their fleet and got 23-24mpg on the highway with the 3.4 litre V6 and Automatic transmission. Due to being a company vehicle I never took it 4wheeling although I would have liked to.

That said, I have been driving my XCab T100 for the past six years and have been pretty impressed with what it will do with mild modifications. I ran Poughkeepsie Gulch this past Summer for the second time in 6 years. They had an FJ Cruisers gathering in Ouray, CO the week of my trip down there and I walked up the biggest obstacle (first try) on that wall while all but two of the FJ's struggled to make it up. I don't think that anyone there anticipated that I could have made it up unassisted and I had people running up and congratulating me. I have enjoyed making a stealth rig that will do stuff like that. Once I put skid plates and rock rails on it, I can consider it done. A T100 can allow seating for up to six people and the truck bed to haul your gear and toys.

Good luck with whatever you end up choosing.

It's already got more body damage than I would like but that's what a Jeep is for right, or any wheeling rig for that matter. I didn't buy this thing for it to sit in my garage and look pretty.

Steve, I wouldn't count out a JK. I'm not sure what your budget is but I got my JK for $10k from these guys a couple months ago and love it. Yeah it has a little damage, but sliders and corner guards can hide damage. They are shady SOB's. They hide damage from internet buyers and will not disclose any info, but since they are local you can go inspect and start up any thing on the lot that runs. They don't care if you show up and look around. Just walk in from the open gate on the side. They won't even bug you unless you have a question for them. You can also negotiate ~$1000 off their vehicles. Check back often, have a lot of JK's come and go quite often. Much more than Daveys Jeeps and they are too far away anyways.

JKs are cool. I could only afford one if my truck sold, which it hasn't. So I'm picking up Rot Box's 4runner tonight. I think it'll be a good fit. I can swap my entire front end's parts over (suspension, steering, lift, diff, uca's) along with some other goodies.

Awesome news Steve. I think you can do your own 48 hour build/parts swap over. Looking forward to seeing it come together.

Any interest in exploring other brands than Toyota? I love yota's but there are TONS of awesome brands out there. The type of wheeling you describe would be perfect for an early Land Rover Discovery (let the flaming begin). Or an Xterra (although kinda small, they have to be close in size to the 4runner).

I have LOVED every Discovery I have owned, and contrary to popular belief, they have always been rock solid reliable for me. With an OME lift on it and some 265's you will have a great trail vehicle that has excellent highway manners.

My Xterra was also awesome I didn't own it for terribly long, but it was fun to drive (especially because I had the manual trans model). Comparing the offroad performance of the stock Xterra vs. stock Discovery, the Disco would walk all over the Xterra.

(edit, you posted your decision while I was preaching haha)

haha, i WISH i could do a 48 hour build like Kurt. For one, I couldn't get 10 guys to come help me, and two, it takes me more than 48 hours to do just the tubbing. I do hope to have it wheelable by Thanksgiving. (moab???)

Swapping front diff stuff should be easy. I'm thinking I'll add an ARB up front since I'll have it out anyway, and I've been worried about my front diff breaking more than anything. An ARB will beef up the spider gears. I doubt I'll use the ARB more than once every few months, but it'll be nice peace of mind.

Other than that, it should be a straightforward swap. The rock light swap will be a pain, and the tubbing will be a pain, but that's ok. The cool part is, the tacoma is still going to be super capable with duals, 33's, and a rear locker, so it should still sell for a decent price.

Thanksgiving seems like a good point to shoot for. I know the tubbing is going to be the longest and most tedious part of it. Luckily like you said you already have probably most everything you need for this thing and you've done this enough to have a good idea of what not to do and how long it's going to take.

I'm in. I love hacking up Steve's rigs....

Steve, we need to get your electrical set up so you can run impact tools without unplugging your clothes dryer..

Interesting how things come full circle. It was not long ago and you had a dual cab tacoma. I have been noticing how many of us come full circle lately. Greg had a killer Cruiser that may have been perfect for you. I guess it was a Lexus rather. Is there a reason that 60 series cruisers have not been considered? The best vehicle i have ever been in the snow with was a 60 cruiser. I would think the 60 would be close to the same size as your rig now. Perhaps parts would change over?
