Watched my father in law verbaly abuse my wife when we were dating. He was an alcoholic. Anybody who says their drinking to the point of being an alcoholic does'nt affect anyone else is clueless.
Then I watched him die slowly from the affects of smoking and heavy drinking.
Did'nt want to drink or smoke after that. Trust me it's a terrible way to die. ;)

not that east coast beer is any different from any other state that lets you have real bear .average beer that you get out of this state is 6% or higher.a local micro brew in jersey were i lived had a beer that was close to 8% i think . it knocked you on you but after a few of those.when i drink it's Captian & Coke if i drink beer it has to have a certain flavor or i can't deal with it.

I drink for a variety of reasons. I've had a lot of trouble sleeping over the last few months, and I discovered a few drinks helps me sleep soundly. That's not why I started, though, but it is one reason it continues. I really like the taste of beer, especially with certain foods. So once in a while I kicked back a beer or two with some food.

As for getting drunk, yep I do that too. I'm a happy drunk and everything is funner when intoxicated. Yeah, people do lose inhibitions, but I've always been able to keep my head on straight when I'm drunk and I don't do things I wouldn't do sober. I think getting drunk is fine if you control it and it doesn't control you. Know your limits, don't over-do it, NEVER drive, and hang out in a safe environment with people you trust. There's nothing I hate more than people who don't know when to stop and end up dry heaving. It ruins the whole night. You just gotta drink some, wait for it to hit ya, drink more if you can handle it, wait, etc. If you're responsible and don't lose your head, you're fine.

I drink because I like beer. I seldom drink to get drunk--but sometimes it's fun. If they made a non-alcaholic beer that tasted good, I'd drink it--but they don't.

I'm not an angry drunk (at least very very rarely) but, like you, I fail to understand why people who are angry drunks continue to drink--it's not fun to be angry. The times I do get drunk I be sure and do it responsibly--sometimes it's fun to let loose, let loose your inhibitions, and forget about the every day crap that goes on for a couple hours. For every irresponsible drinker, every alcaholic, and every person who abuses alcahol, there are 100 people who drink responsibly.

I respect everyones choice to drink or not drink. It's not for everyone. I just hate it when people try to limit my choices because they don't agree with them.

As far as nothing good coming from drinking--I guess it depends on how you look at it. I can't think of anything good that comes from eating bacon either, but I still eat it.

Quit cold turkey about 6 years ago. I dunno entirely what happened. Went to the local bar with a co-worker (drunk) had a couple beers with him. Took a look around me and saw ALOT of people whose lives were being negatively impacted.(including mine) On my way home it was like a switch flipped inside my head. I haven't felt like drinking since that day. I do sometimes get the old "a beer would go good with this food" like JamesK was saying, but I have found that an O'douls from time to time fixes this.

Anyway I am glad that I quit. If we have a BBQ or something I will still buy some beer for the folks who do drink, I just try to make sure no one binges or tries to drive if they have too many. Moderation is probably the key, but some people just can't do it.(Me for one)

There's too many people now with camera phones and digi cams. I'd rather make a ass of myself sober and remember everything. Family members feel free to chime in about last weekend. I used to drink, mmm tequila and Jager. Loved Jager and Peach Schnaps mixed shots. I quit because enough was enough and it would only get worse. I went from goody 2 shoes to Joe Drunk way too easy and fast. It was time for me to grow up and set my life down the path that I know I should go. Not really a religion thing, but a " Let's pull our head out thing". There's no benefits to it, unless you like waking up with someone that looks like James K or Hickey. There's far too many other things in life that are worth putting your money into than what your going to throw up later. I do not judge others if they drink, that's their choice. But I have no sympathy for those that bring harm to others because they were drunk (DUI accidents, murder, abuse, stupid stuff).

Good point on the bacon comment, BUT, I can't remember the last time I lost control of myself (violent, rude, or just plain silly) while eating bacon. Again I say it is your life, you choose what to do or what not to do I am just stating a fact about bacon.... :D

Nope, no need to. If my life sucked enough that I felt the need to "escape" from it from time to time I would take a step back and look at changing my life rather than trying to escape from it.

Well, if you'd eat a 12 pack of bacon every night for 3 years, you might get violent, rude or just plain silly (that's my vote).......

I used to drink. I thought it was a good way to "escape". Then I would sober up and realize that all my problems were still there. The only thing that had changed was how much money I had and this pounding headache. I did things when I was drunk that I would never have done sober.

To chose to quit drinking. If you like to drink that is your choice and I will not judge you on it.
