I will be replacing one of our vehicles with a Trooper and was curious what your experience has been with them? I know they are reliable up to 1997 and have a beefy drive train, and they are highly underrated by many which keeps resale down. I will be looking at the 95-97 models with the more powerful engine.

I have a few buddies that have them.

They prefer them to the jeeps though at the time there wasn't much aftermarket support.
They likes them better because the stock drive train was fairly decent and with some custom work you have a very unique vehicle.

I have a '96 and it's been good. I put OME 2" springs in the rear and cranked the torsion bars in the front to get a little lift, I think if I went with a little larger tire it would have been a little more capable (285 vs 265). I added a 3rd row so I can haul a squad of girls, added rails, OME front bumper, and a real rear bumper.

As for what I've done to it, mine has about 214k miles on it, when I got it I drained all the fluids and I don't know if the previous owner had touched them (the rear looked like it had some water in the fluid). I replaced plugs and filters, replaced wheel bearings, and replaced the U-joints. I broke my tie rod on a trip to Moab and I believe I also lost a CV shaft around the same time (one may have caused the other). I used some ES150R and ES150L joints and had Carl thread some tube for my tie rods and I don't believe I will have an issue with them in the future, the CV shaft was just replaced using an Oreilly part.

I think part of the resale value equation is Isuzu has left the US market so no dealer support, the wrecking yards seem to have plenty of them so parts are available if you go that route, it wasn't a concern to me because I don't go to dealers for support. Other random thoughts, the rear axle is beefy probably somewhere between a dana 60 and a 44, however there aren't any available ring/pinon options available if you want to change from the stock 4.56 gears. For parts spares I would invest in a CV shaft (both sides are the same) and replacement/upgraded tie rod.

I already snagged the OME rear coils and shocks off a 95 the other day, and Isuzus are surely plentiful in the salvage yards. This wouldn't be a wheeling rig, more of a camping/fishing/hunting/back country setup with just some 31x10.50 BFG's and a sleeping platform in the back, so it would remain stock other than the shocks/springs in the rear and new shocks up front without messing with the torsion bars. I think with the 31's and a manual that 20mpg should be easy to get, and on top of a full tune-up I would swap in an electric fan and better intake/exhaust that will free up a few extra ponies. It doesn't make sense having 2 lifted Jeeps right now and IFS would be a better match for the stuff we do when not crawling over rocks, plus 20mpg is more enticing for getting out than 15mpg. And after being up close with these rear axles at the salvage yard I will say they are thicker than a cast d44, all of the axle tubes are welded instead of pressed in and just plain beefy.

I have no dog in the fight because I've never owned one and know very little about Troopers, but shouldn't this be cause for alarm?

I think that goes back to resale value, something goes wrong and blue book says your Trooper is only worth $1500 do you spend the money or move onto something else? Most these were soccer mom mobiles and kids are getting beyond soccer age now so mom's looking for some new wheels.

This is mine. I've been quite pleased with it thus far. My dad also has one set up in much the same fashion. As the saying goes, keep it simple, stupid. You'll be happy.

Also check out Planet Isuzu. TONS of info.

Not really. They are very reliable rigs with mostly ASIN components. The auto tranny in them (which is a GM product) is crap and when that goes out, most of the soccer mom's who own them just junk 'em because the resale is so low and the replacement cost of the tranny is more than they could sell them.

i had a 91 when i was 17, it was my second car. it was pretty fun but i don't really think the ride was any better on dirt roads than the xj i replaced it with. mine was a 2.8 v6 with a 5 speed. i also thought the power/gearing combo seemed quite similar in it compared to my 2.5L 5 speed xj FWIW

Sounds like yours was a first gen, a lot more rough than the second gen's. The second gen (UX) Troopers are much more plush. I think the ride is very smooth compaired to an XJ, particularly once you install the OME kit onto it.

I signed up on planet Isuzu a few weeks ago, good site for sure. Wasn't the GM tranny behind only a few years of the Trooper in the late 80's? I'm just looking forward to having more space, better mpg, and a smoother ride. Plus it would be nice to have a rig setup for the easy back country trails without bringing a Jeep. Stephen, are you using the stock tire carrier on the barn doors?

The auto tranny that Isuzu used all the way to the end was GM or GM liscensed design as far as I know. If it changed, I'm unaware. What I do know is that they are the weakest link in a second gen Trooper. Find a manual and you'll be happy.
Yup, stock tire carrier.

I know your looking 95-97 but my 2000 has treated me well so far. The 3.5 uses a bit of oil but it's easy to keep a check on. My auto is fine so far but I have to get a new pan gasket (leaking) and it's a pain to check and top off. I've got OME 919's and a roofrack and only get ~15mpg on the stock tires. That's my only complaint with it.

I don't know much about these rigs, but I just don't see you getting your wish of 20mpg. Perhaps it's possible, but a loaded camping rig on even 31-32's with an already doggy 3.5lt, it's not going to be easy.

You are correct, sir. I'm lucky if I get about 18mpg with my setup in commute mode (read: not loaded down for travel). You load it down with gear for two over a long weekend and you'll be closer to the 15mpg mark. The 3.2L is a strong motor is backed by a manual tranny and I've never had want for power, but it's not sipping gas either.

I had 255/85 Trxus on mine before the OME. They only rubbed the top of the wheel well while going over whoops. I'm going to be getting 255/85 Cooper ST's soon.

I'm the trooper owner for 6 years... been mostly stock until last year. pretty reliable car, and it surprised me first time in moab when it was all stock. my 93 stock tire size 245/70r16 which is about 29" i believe, and been running 245/75 16 for many years, and last year i changed to 32" 265/75r16 tire, gas mileage and power on uphill is the only complain on it. Let me know if you have any questions.
