I mention Google only because it's come up in recent threads, I'm not referring to just Google. Also your ISP, your cable company, your mobile phone provider, Facebook and other social media, and who knows who else?
Certain people who shall remain nameless (but whose name starts with Sp and ends with Ence ) have argued that it's silly to be concerned with privacy rights in the information age. I disagree. Here's what Facebook (and anybody that pays them) knows about you: http://yro.slashdot.org/story/13/03...ws-if-youre-gay-use-drugs-or-are-a-republican. Here's what your phone company (and any government that illegally accesses those records) knows about you: http://www.businessinsider.com/what-you-can-learn-from-phone-metadata-2013-7. It's pretty easy from that to see the wealth of information Google has on you.
The Obama administration (and to be fair, the Bush II administration too) have already demonstrated that they're actively interested in stripping whatever Constitutional rights we have left, and it's pretty easy to see what's coming next. Do you want them to have access to all that information when push comes to shove?
This is why privacy matters. Our Bill of Rights is there in large part to set limits on the governments' powers and protect us from our own leaders. The more those leaders wish to circumvent those protections, the more I'm ready to head for the hills. And the more private companies like Google and Facebook collect info that could be used against us, the less I trust them as well.
