Anyone using it? I have a copy of it that came with my D820 laptop. I'm curious if it's 'safe' and stable to use? or should I hold off another 6 months?

I have it on a dual boot with XP, haven't bothered using it in months. It's not bad, but XP works so well and I have it tweaked exactly how I want it. Vista has been so dumbed down that I find it frustrating to do simple tasks. For example, in XP, I like right clicking on my network connection in the tray and having immediate access to the status and properties. To do the same in Vista requires multiple steps. The built-in firewall in Vista is even worse than in XP, and that's saying a lot. XP's NTBackup supports tape drives and selective backups, which I use regularly. Vista will only backup the entire drive, and only to disk or removable media.

These are all the reasons I only installed it on a blank drive to check it out... I realized fairly quick that I didn't want it and never gave it a second look. That was when it was first released - March was it?

Yeah what Brad said...

You are a geek enough (no offence there big guy :) ) that you will do ok and figure it out, but it may become your new hobby for a few weeks. It does have some cool features, but nothing I can't live without.

When is the first Service Pack due out on Vista? I read about it a few weeks ago, but I can't recall the release date on that. It maybe worth waiting for that to come out before you start your new hobby

I don't need another hobby... I don't even have time to work on the hobbies I have now!

yep what he said. In fact all the machines that we have ordered that have Vista on them have been reloaded with XP.

Been using home premium 64 bit for several months now. Haven't had too many issues yet. I did build a decent machine to run it though.

I doubt my machine is any slouch..
2.4 dual core
4 gig ram
120 gig hdd
512 mb nvidia

In fact, history dictates Windows being the problem, not the machine ;)

I finally got a chance to mess with it last night.
I didn't have my sprint card for my laptop so I wound up borrowing my brother's laptop with Vista on it, just had to log onto the VPN (through a Internet exploder URL) at work and reboot a server. After saying allow a few times I was told I didn't have authorization to install something (Active X applet?). -_--_-
It didn't help his screen kept going black and it was super slow. I wasn't impressed.
He couldn't find his driver disk for his verizon card so I ended up driving into town with my laptop until I found a hotel with an open wireless connection. :greg:

When it comes time for me to retire my XP box I know I could transition to a linux distro a lot easier than Vista. I gave up trying to get a DOS window (start --> run --> cmd in the last 3+ versions of windows). Reboot his laptop? Should be simple, hit the stupid button that relaced the start button and click the power button icon right? Nope laptop just goes to sleep. -_- I think MS just decided to throw away all previous knowledge aquired since Windows NT and make you learn a new OS. If I'm learning a new OS there are other options out there.

Spork's rating of Vista: Lower than Windows ME.

I really think that Vista is an 'intermediat version' much like ME, M$ has to have a new product every 3 years even if they don't have a good product, I've heard rumors about the mysterious "microsoft Linux" project that is likely to be their next OS. To be honest XP learned a lot from ME about what *NOT* to do, I hope M$ does the same, I won't run Vista, probabbly ever. and I've pulled it off machines that are "vista only" machines tracking down generic driver sets for XP. It's a PITA, but it's better then Vista.

I just got a Dell XPS with Vista already on it and i hate it ! Vista is such a pain in the ass especially when trying to network a Vista to an XP. If I can find an XP disk im wiping this clean and going to XP. And also on my laptop it takes just about a 1G or RAM just to run the OS itself, RAM is for games not running the OS. o yea and the sleep button that looks like the off button is way stupid.

I have a Dell XP disc you can have for a buck (cover shipping costs)... ;) I think I have some XP COA's, too...

eh... Vista isn't that bad, you just need to turn the 'dumb' knob down a bit and it starts acting like a real os.

Agreed that it's not bad, but it's certainly not all that it's cracked up to be. Frankly it ran OK for me, even with the driver difficulties and signing required for 64-bit Ultimate. But the small annoyances really started to stack up, and it has been relegated to the position of rarely used in a dual boot config.

Surprisingly, Server 2008 is quite good so far in the betas I've been playing with.

I agree with the small annoyances. I don't use it on my primary pc yet, but we have it loaded on our laptop. It's pretty bloated, especially for the fancy effect stuff which is nice, but not nice enough to be acceptable for the loss in performance.

I have high hopes for SP1. XP was pretty nasty brand new as well!

Honestly, if the daily programs that I use ran perfect on a good flavor of linux I would never look back. But that won't be the case for a while.
