I'm so glad to live so close to the Provo River. On my way up to Heber on Thursday I caught this brown near the raft rental place. We have such good fishing in this state. Some of my fav spots are Grandaddy Basin (if you go WAY back to avoid the 37 scout troops that are there any given day), AF canyon, and the Green near FG Dam.

Anyone else fish? Flys? Lures? TNT?

My favorite is timothy and farmers basin in the unitahs back when I had pack horses, we spent a whole week up there a few summers ago and never saw another person.

Middle Provo is fine, my friend owns 9 acres near Midway and I have the combination to the lock but I would rather fish the Redrock and the Beaverhead in MT near Dillion. The fish there dwarf what you can catch on the Provo or the Green.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
Growing up in Alaska, I did A LOT of fishing. Anywhere from rainbows and dollies, all the different salmon, to halibut. I loved it.

Fast forward 15 years, I find myself without a pole and dreaming about mickey mouse poles for my little girls.

So what do I need to do to get back into it? I assume I need permits? What about my girls? Aged 2 and 4.

What kind of rules are out there about bait, luers (sp?), flies?

Where are some family friendly places to go in the salt lake area? What about fun places that I can park the Jeep right next to the water and fish from my seat, if any?

What kind of fish are in the water around here?

Thanks for the info...

Done plenty of fishing up AFC (Silver Lake is the best IMO, a bit of a hike, but well worth it to get away from the crowds) and Provo Canyon.

Since moving out here we have had some great fishing trips in the mountains-

I'm a big fan of Rapalas, spinner and the occasional wet fly. I tried fly fishing on the Provo one Summer and didn't have much luck, so I've stuck to a traditional rod & reel.

We need to get out more later this year, I haven't fished for the last 2 yrs and I miss standing next to a river in the middle of nowhere, catching fish.

You will need a fishing license but your girls are free:D
Get a proclamition, way to many rules to list but the proc is easy to read and understand.
With kids I like the mirror lake hwy, Trial lake is the best or the river. Easy access and fast fishing, the kids love it.
Around SLC you got catfish, white bass. largemouth bass & walleye in UT lake. In the canyons like millcreek, big and little cottonwood canyon there is some easy brook trout. Also you got deercreek, jordanelle, rockport, echo reserviors for trout that are close but not always gaurenteed to catch fish.

I never leave the uintas without catching fish. Your girls will love it. I've been a Provo river rat since i was 12. The fishing is tough somedays. I'm on a roll this year, every time I've gone out even in 20 degree weather I've at least caught one. As opposed to last year where I got skunked a lot. You need to watch the hatches. My favorite is the evening Caddis hatches. The fish go nuts for them and it's at dusk so they can't see as well and they feed by motion. You can bowling ball a cast and still get a hit. That's when the bats come out too, I always hit them with my rod.

I'm a self taught Fly fisher and for the first year I never had a fish on my line. It had a lot to do with gear but the more I learned and got into tying my own flies it became even more satisfying. Especially since my favorite stretch of the river is at the mouth of the canyon and I live 5 minutes away.

I like to fish all over the state but some of our favorites are Flaming Gorge where you can catch kokanie salmon, lake trout, bass, and several other species, and the Uintas. My son and I were up in the Uintas Friday and caught some really nice brookies just off the Mirror Lake Highway.

Fishing in Alaska ROCKS!!!

I'm taking my daughters salmon fishing on the Kenai on 06/24 and 07/01, and then a half day Halibut trip out of Homer sometime in between. (they've never been on a big boat yet)
