WTF is wrong with the PowerJoke CPS?

Ok, I'm on my THIRD CPS in two years in my Powerstroke.

The first two made it run poorly when they went out, but this last one, it just wouldn't start. I had NO CLUE (well, "I" didn't think it would be that--there's one in my glovebox I should have tried) it could be CPS and had Nelson Diesel (1565 Redwood Rd., Woods Cross) fix my truck. Felt pretty good about them as I thought I was in for a $,$$$.$$ fix and they were pretty reasonable and quite quick to diagnose/fix.

Does anyone KNOW what's actually wrong with these things?

Poor grounding?

Fragile component on the front of a motor that tends to vibrate?

Any knowledge out there?

You got off cheap. First time mine went out, we were hunting. Had to pay a wrecker bill from tower mountain. I was pissed. Ruined our whole hunt. Not to mention the ten mile walk back to camp.:mad2:

I'm not disputing that I "got off cheap" (If I would have been somewhere, I would have put the CPS in (I hope) just to see if made a difference). There's just got to be something fixable here. It's WAY worse than the 4.0L Jeep CPS.

I just ordered two for spares. (the last one I bought was $90 at the Trashinal dealer)

Sounds like you better buy a six pack and put some Velcro on 'em

Hmmmm, mine may be different (OBS) but I have only replaced it once in 5 years. I replace the XJ about once a year....

I wonder if the off brand ones are as bad as they were for the 4.0's?? I got 3 bad 4.0 cps in row from Autozone. But$16 for a spare is:cool:

I had one go out in Farmington and got towed to the Ford dealer. They said it would have been over $800 but it was covered (just barely) by warranty. It's been good the 65k miles since then (knock on wood).

Ford has a new cps that came out but you have to request it by part number, mine ran me 24 bucks. They will try to rip you for more then 75 if you just ask for a cps. All the details are on dieselstop if you want the info. By the way I keep one in the glovebox but haven't had anything happen;)

See the link above. It's supposed to be more 'robust' than the other ones. My old one was an International one. I learned my lesson about Autozone sensors LONG ago. Thus the OEM comment

I have had a spare CPS in my glove box since I've owned my truck, but never needed to use it.

The Ford CPS or CMP sensor as referred to by Ford are junk. They alway have been. Usually when the engine is hot it will cause the sensor to have an open circuit internally and the vehicle may stall and not restart again until it cools down. If it just runs poor your lucky. Many people end up stranded with a huge tow bill as a result.

This was caused by the part manufacturer. As you may or may not know there is no such thing as an American made Ford anymore. Your truck may have parts made in 75 different countries. And as a result, quality suffers.

Lucky for 7.3L diesel owners Ford has contracted a new company to build the replacement sensors available from Ford dealers. It is a new part and "SHOULD" be much more reliable. Just be sure to ask for the "new" one as some dealers may be trying to deplete there old stock. The new one is only about $28 vs. $190 for the old one.

Get an extra for the glove box just in case as these are too new to see what kind of long term reliability they have yet.

Do the "new" ones work in the 95-97 7.3's too??

Mark, wasn't trying to trash on you. Just trying to vent about the ford cps grief I went through. They are pieces of s#&@@t!

I was in the same boat when I had my stroker. I had one fail up in God's country once after a long weekend of camping. Luckily it decided to start up for me after a lot of cranking. It was under warranty and of course the stealer couldn't duplicate. Luckily a few weeks later it completely died on me in the city, so then they got to pay for a tow bill too. Mine was covered under the 5/100 engine warranty so it was only $100. After that I bought a spare off ebay too keep in the truck, that seemed to keep it from happening again.

When I sold the stroker I dumped my spare CPS on KSL and after just a few hours I had a long list of calls for it, so they are in high demand.

I know the members on thedieselstop.com were complaining to NHTSA about getting a recall issued. I don't know what will come of it, I put my complaint in and still have my receipt if they make it a retroactive recall.

With the new "cheap" part through the dealer I would get one and carry it for a spare (keep it right next to your glow plug relay spare  ), it's a quick and easy road side repair.

No sweat. It's TOTALLY not fun to have issues when you're out recreating. It's bad enough if you're in town near service.
