Yup, the problem with all 4.0's just caught up to me yesterday,

My exhaust manifold just cracked at the center of two primaries so no way to weld it... I'm going to try that exhaust leak stuff on it so I can at least drive the sucker until the weekend without killing myself

1999 XJ cherokee 4.0

Somebody recommend a good/ cheap exhaust: a link would be nice

not looking for performance as much as reliability, I've replaced one before in a 92 and I never want to do it again... but it looks like I will be this weekend

APN? Banks? Gibson? Borla? some eBay crap? I'd much rather support someone local.

and I'll probably replace the factory "pizza pocket" crunched downpipe while I'm in there.

Any local parts recommendations

thanks.

I just got one from ebay a couple weeks ago. Im happy with it so far. The welds look good and it fit right.

Its the one that says he will replace it if you have a problem no questions asked.

It was 110 with shipping. The one I pulled off was a Gibson and it had 2 cracked tubes at the collector. It was only a few years old so I would not recommend spending 400 bucks for a basic piece of Gibson $h!+

I've got the Crown replacement manifold here in stock with flexible bellows that are supposed to eliminate the cracking. The kit with gasket is pretty inexpensive.....

Otherwise, we sell Banks and Borla, but they seem to still crack. They'll warranty replacement manifolds if they do, but you still have to change 'em. :(

just for reference, i have a manifold with flexible bellows and it is cracked just like every other 4.0 manifold on the planet. i'm not sure if it is crown though. just my $.02. i have heard good things about the gibson one, and i saw one on ksl for like $250 brand new a while back.

Stratton, when the inspection station fails your non stock exhaust system, just tell them they're wrong and jealous of your cool j**p.

I can see it now,
"sir your exhaust is leaking, we can't pass that"

"No, it's not you're an idiot"
"Well then you also fail because of: blah blah blah"
"No your wrong, your just jealous because your mullet and 80's IROC aren't as cool as my Jeep"

So I bought that eBay one yesterday, $106 shipped, And I got a shipping confirmation about 2 hours later.... that's fast, we'll see how it turns out.

Carl, you got a pm

anybody know locally where I can get a new downpipe?
I'm knew to this whole exhaust thing but I assume I can just get one bent up a muffler shop or ???
that way I can get rid of the factory "crush" they put in to clear the front driveshaft.

I just found mine is cracked - 04, so it's the two peice style. I didn't want to spend $400 bucks either, so I ordered up a Pacesetter - we'll see! I think my cost shipped was $180

So I ripped out the old manifold last night only took about 3 hours... wobblies are worth their weight in gold (so much less vacuum lines than my old 92)

Is there any better way to clean the intake manifold while I have it out than brake cleaner?

Not unless you have a vibrating solvent dip...;)

It must be the season or cracked manifolds. I just installed my second one. The last one was a Banks. It didn't last a year. This time I got an Edelbrock. Probably won't be much better. Anyway, the damn donut gasket they gave me won't even fit. I tried the old one, but it's even smaller. The donut is mutalate now so I have to go buy another one from Autozone I guess. Is there some trick to getting the donut gasket on?
