I'm building myself a family rig similar to jaydens but better šŸ˜† .5.3, Whipple, th400, atlas4.3, 14 bolts with 05 knuckles, 40 spline. @BeepBeep fabricated us a baby boy (I helped). View attachment 173025i picked my axles up from the sandblaster yesterday.20240524_134321.jpg20240524_203830.jpg2005-2008 have stronger knuckles and inner cs. I have one 09 housing and one 05-08 housing. Ima put the stronger crap on the rear. I'd guess the strength difference is within 10%

09' with windows by lower ball joint and slightly thinner casting.

You can pump grease into the unit bearings here. 20240611_201329.jpg20240611_211238.jpg20240611_211715.jpgI got my steering parts cut.20240611_193333.jpgMy atlas showed up. Pics of the 09' FoMoCo knuckles. Thinner around the ball joints, thinner where my 05-08 highsteer steer plates weld on, and the gigantic window around the lower balljoint. 20240630_203054.jpg20240630_203326.jpg20240630_203100.jpgChunk of 3/820240701_215703.jpg20240701_215708.jpg Ball joint eliminators 20240701_215714.jpgStacking them out. That was alot of welding. As much as id like to tig weld these it would be too cumbersome considering the 400* preheat and post heat i give these as well as the pounds of weld i put into each one inside and out. I try and over kill these everytime i do them. I designed these plates to have a neutral Ackerman angle and they turn 45* with a 9" ram. The rusty set are for my powdercoater. 20240701_215825.jpg20240701_215835.jpg

I donā€™t follow SD60 threads super close but this is the first Iā€™ve read of FoMoCo knuckles and the speed holes. Still beef, just not as much beef? Disappointing that cost, material, weight savings ruin a perfectly good thing.

Still beefy. Ima run them on my front axle. They are still massive compared to the kingpin stuff and i have throughly tested the limits on king pin strength. The 09 inner Cs are also weaker than the 05-08.

09 C on the left. 05-08 on the right

I decided it would be better to just replace the tubes then to cut and spice them to get them offset enough. The original tubes were only .250 thick and pretty rotten under the original spring perches. 20240706_171333.jpg20240706_171346.jpgI then shaved the 14bolt ring gear down to 10.05" to see if it was worth doing. After 45 minutes running a 9" grinder while wrecking my lathe and then measuring to see, the best you gain is .75" maybe. I decided its just not worth doing, especially with offset differentials. 20240706_225821.jpg20240706_225825.jpg20240707_222225.jpgNew tube is 3.75" x.5wall so i can get the inner Cs to fit right on without a spacer. 20240714_220908.jpgCalculating the lengths of tube im after. I'm thinking 68" wms will work good. 20240714_220822.jpg20240714_220916.jpg

You should gain 1.75 inches with a shave. With the right insert ring gears are easily turned. No grinder needed.

I will try to find out. I don't work at that shop anymore and neither does the machinist but it was no problem. Ate it like it was mild steel. Insert was intact after completion.
