Whiskey

I know you have, I remember. I talk the same shit in person, but it comes across less endearing on the internet for some reason.

We've been moving away from whiskey barrels the last couple of years. We still do our Anniversary ale in them, but it's become a hodgepodge of different barrels and has become somewhat difficult to blend how we want each year. We have been picking up gin barrels, mezcal barrels, sotol etc barrels a bit more, and I think the next one I want is an Amburana wood barrel. That stuff is wild and I think it was just recently de-black-listed by the TTB for brewery use. That stuff is so intense I think I could get away with 1 53 gallon barrel to blend with 250 gallons of beer and it would still be noticeable.
That all sounds very interesting.

The Antiques?
I have WLW (2020), GTS (2021), and the Saz 18 (2019). The saz is the rarest and my least favorite. I had a pappy 20 but I shared it with 20 of my closest homies in a single cheers.

If you want to try any, let me know. I have some little bottles I can put some in. I'm willing to trade too. I have an unopened bottle of Stagg Jr if any one is interested. I don't care much about it and it will take me 5 years to drink it.
What’s the stagg worth to you? It will take me just as long to drink it but that’s one I don’t have

I just returned from North Carolina, I picked up three local bottles, only one is whiskey but here they are: a bottle of Old Raleigh, freaking cool bottle, this one is out of Zebulon NC, I also pick up a Bottle of Conniption Navy Strenght Gin, and a Bottle of Knupnikas, both from the same distillery in Durham NC. I sampled the Knupnikas tonight. Very smooth sipping with very pleasant orang/ apple and sweet honey flavors. It’s pretty unique.

This is the first time I have ever purchased allocated products from the liquor store, I was able to pick up a bottle of Eagle rare and a bottle of Blantons this morning. They are both on my list of Whiskeys to try so I jumped at the opportunity to pick up a bottle. It was interesting how many people were in line for a bottle of Eagle rare the Logan location only had 6 bottles and as soon as they had been claimed a large amount (around 10 ) people left the line. I hope that’s a good sign. Cheers everyone!

Well, Merry Christmas to you!

Eagle rare has always been my go to shelf whiskey. It's good enough to drink neat, but not so good that you feel weird mixing it. It's a good $30 bottle, but not worth waiting in line for unless it's just the checkout line.

I'll take it over blanton's. I've never been a fan. It's fine, but I prefer other bottles for cheaper.

@Cody and... how was it?
Really good. I really like these old cognacs and armagnacs. This had lots of dried fruit, fig, date. Like a really classy fruit cake. Some sweet tobacco and cedar.

You can pick up baller bottles of stuff like this from fine drams... 20-30-40 year old small batch/estate produced hand labled stuff for about what people pay for blanton's. Takes a few weeks to arrive, but it always gets here.

I'm really just working my way through the salt Lake spirit society's annual advent calendar right now. It's a good way to learn about some different stuff without having to buy the entire bottle.

This one spent 40 years in French oak...

IMG_5612.jpegI’m starting to get time to open a couple of my new bottles, I selected this bottle of 1792, it’s on the scratch off list.
It has a very bitter forward to it, lots of tobacco, a hint of vanilla that lingers for a long time. Otherwise I didn’t find it overly complex. My wife didn’t like this one at all. I told her we should do a YouTube channel of non whiskey drinkers who try whiskey, some of the faces she pulls are pretty terrific. It is an ok but not very complex bottle. I think I would pass on this, it was a bit different but not a top shelf in my opinion.

And another one, devils river agave bourbon a guy at work loves this stuff. He gave me a bit in a jar to try. It has a strong sweet almost brown sugar smell. It has a very sweet start, almost honey, lemon, black pepper, cherry and is that coconut ? with an almost sweet finish, very smooth no burn. Not sweet like schnapps just enjoyable,I will be buying a bottle of this!

Ooh that sounds good 😋

So how was this? And does that mean you don’t drink alcohol?
I actually didn’t care for it much. Really runny and got soaked up almost instantly by the pancakes we had turning them to mush.
I’ll stick with my honorary Aunt’s syrup. It’s pretty killer.
That’s right. I’m not a drinker.
