    I like beer.

Beer is proof that God loves us.

Update. It still makes the noise with the drive shaft removed, so that wasn't it. Still, it was good to remove it, because it clearly needs some maintenance.

Looks like I can just replace the boot for much less. Might try replacing the U-joint, and putting a new boot on the CV.

Just checked. They have replacement CV joints at Oreilly for $172. Damn.

I took off the front drive shaft. One u-joint cap seems to be frozen. I would expect it to squeak, so that's a possibility for the source of the noise. Also, the rubber boot is all torn at the base of the CV. It still seems to move freely, but it looks a bit rusty inside. Are the CVs serviceable?

Does yours also seem to come from the driver side? Any idea what they do when they "rebuild" them? Just the bearings and seals?

That would be affected by speed, but not by turning the wheel, so it might not be such a long shot. It would be a little strange to hear that noise so clearly coming from the driver's side wheel though. Maybe I'll take off the front drive shaft and see if that makes any difference. It doesn't...

I went to check the dust cover today, and realized it doesn't have them. Soooooo, that's not it.

It's a WJ, not a ZJ. Same basic front axle though. It is always spinning, but not always in four wheel drive. It's a selec-trac, and nearly always in two wheel drive. I would really prefer not to tear the whole thing apart, but if it comes to that I will.

It's not the brake pads, since it still made the noise with the pads and caliper removed. The dust shield is not rubbing the rotor, but that doesn't mean that it's not resonating. I'm blissfully cat-free since 2010ish. I'm going to throw it back up on jack stands and get the noise going, then...

What is the bolt pattern on those?

Yeah, I'm wondering if the noise is in there, and being transferred out to the wheel via the axle shaft.

I didn't take the boot off when it was apart. I would think the noise would change when I turn if it was the cv.

The noise came back today! It's on the same side, but seems to come on at a higher speed now. So, if it isn't the wheel bearing or the brakes, what is it? Maybe something inside the differential?

I picked up a Timken and swapped it tonight. That seems to have done the trick. No more noises on that side! Actually, it's so quiet now that I can really notice how much noise is coming from the other side. I probably should just knock that one out too. It's actually got about 180 thousand...

It makes no noise in reverse, but it makes no noise in forward either, until 30 MPH or so. I haven't tried the same speed in reverse...

Timken is a little cheaper than Precision. I guess I'll have to track one down tomorrow.
