    Hunting Season Opened for us

rholbrook, we found that oryx about 30 miles from my house in southern NM. They were transplanted to the Army's White Sands Missile Range from Namibia in the mid-1970s and have been hunted free-range since 1978. They are prolific, and have expanded their range well beyond the missile range and...

    Hunting Season Opened for us

Hunting season started on August 1 again this year with my daughter's oryx hunt. That season ended yesterday afternoon when we found this guy wandering the desert and got close enough for her to put him down.

    Hunting Season Opened for us

Nope, neither, at least recently. A few of what I presume are your west slope cutthroats in a lake above Platoro, CO. I have tried for Gilas a couple times, but haven't been successful yet. You would probably want to try Whitewater Creek and the forks of the Gila River for Gila trout. The NM...

    Hunting Season Opened for us

Good for you! I just finished a seven day, six night, 30-mile backpacking trip in the San Juan Wilderness with six Scouts, including my son. We had a great time hiking, camping, orienteering, and fishing. All things that young men should learn.

General Tech What did you work on Today?

Put some Headwaters seat covers on the front seat of the Ram. The Kryptec Raid is a bit lighter than the Typhoon on the back seats , which I like. Full coverage now.

What did you work on Today; Home Edition

Pulled out the stump of a nectarine tree the bores killed last year. The cheap tree strap that came with my high lift recovery kit wasn't up to the task. I'll take recommendations on a good US-made replacement.

    Proud father moments

No fancy pictures, but my son (a junior is HS) just finished his year with a 3.7 GPA and his little sister completed sixth grade with a 4.0. So yeah, I'm pretty proud of them.

    Political So now what

What TRD says. I have kids in school too, and I don't like it. But further restricting the rights of those who already obey all the laws will do little, if anything, to solve America's moral crisis.

    Your Pic of The Day

My son led a team of Scouts and adults yesterday to do the fieldwork portion of his Eagle Service Project. He is removing invasive salt cedars and replacing them with native cottonwoods.

    Mount Rushmore Trip

That part of the country is cool. We did this trip from southern NM a few years ago. Some highlights for us (aside from the monument itself) include: We did a gold mine tour with after-tour gold panning. Little kids dig it. If you like trains, ride the 1880 train: https://www.1880train.com/...

    Favorite Toilet Reading

I rarely take my phone to the facilities, instead reading magazines like "Bugle" from the RMEF or paperbacks. As a diehard Fantasy/Sci-Fi guy, I often gravitate that way. My recent viewing of Amazon's "Wheel of Time" prompted me to return to Jordan's 14-book series of the same name to see how...

    Current hotness in Diesel batteries?

I don't know if they qualify as "hot," but the Autozone Duralast Platinum AGMs I put in my 2006 Cummins have been humming along just fine for over four years.

Which 40 is good these days?

I've had 295/75 Yokohama Geolander MTs on my 2006 Ram 2500 since November 2019. They have been great - mud, snow, sand, whatever. I only have about 10k miles, give or take, but they still look great and will probably age out before I wear them out. I'd recommend them.

General Tech What did you work on Today?

Every time I read something from Mike I wish I lived closer so he could work on my truck. I'm sure it needs something! Thanks for all the very informative and drool-worthy posts Mike.
