I'd look more into earlier Kia Sorentos before I looked deeply into Ford Escapes. The Sorentos have a great V6 and full boxed truck frame; even owned a few of the Dakar rallies.

I've actually heard great things about Escapes.. The older ones with true 4WD, and get very respectable gas mileage. Parts are not going to be hard to come by.

The Canguro Racing 5 Unlimited desert car runs this style of extinguisher mount. The clamps broke during our last race, but suprisingly the mount and extinguisher stayed with the car. I happened to notice it during a pit somewhere around 100-150 miles into the race.
