I picked up a new thermostat with the bleeder hole already in it and it works much better now. The old one had a rough spot that must have been keeping it from working properly. I heated it up with a torch and it did open but it was quite warm. With the new thermostat the temp gauge stays around...
I installed the lights last night and everything works, no messed up wiring found on anything yet. I do need some new tail light connectors since they are quite corroded.
The driveline looks to be about 4 inches in diameter, you might try the tear a part there are lots of 14 bolt rear axles out there on different rigs and you should be able to find something smaller.
I have gotten parts from Bill's Boneyard and Rick's Cycle parts they both had lots of old bikes (at least they did quite a few years ago). I would have to look up the addresses.
I have a couple of 33 12.5 15 tires one is an MTR with about 1/4 tread and the other is a brand new BFG AT. I know its not a set but sometimes you find sets of three and need just one more.
We have a lot of fun down around the Boulder mountains: Burr trail with side hikes, Hole in the Rock west half, Tantalus flats road with side trips and hikes, lots of good fishing, Capital Reef, calf creek falls etc etc
I'm pretty sure the guage is grounded and reading correct since I have used an electronic temp meter to read the case temp on the sending unit and the surrounding head surfaces and it matches the guage. I plan on pulling the thermostat and checking it out to see if it working.
Just for fun I started a list of all of the various parts I have put into this project and what they came off of. I set a personal record on this one and no one can say I haven't been an equal opportunity builder. Here are different types of parts I have on it:
73, 68 Commando Body and frame...
The commando project seems to be running hotter than I expect. When it is warm the lower radiator hose is quite a bit cooler than the top hose which makes me think the thermostat may not be doing its job. After doing some checking online I see thermostat temperatures listed for the TBI engines...
Thanks, I got the steering working better, it had a bad u joint in the middle. I'm pretty sure the thermostat is stuck, the top radiator hose is hot and the bottom one is cold so water isn't flowing.
It moves now !!!! I just put in all the drivelines and filled all the fluids and drove it up and down the street. I should have removed all the loose junk that was near the doors since I had to pick up a few parts and tools that fell out. I do have to look into why it seems to run a bit warm...
Well we have a solution. I took everything off of one of the axle shafts and pulled an axle out of his old dana 44 and measured things. It turned out that the shafts are the same as dana 44 shafts and the bearing pocket in the housing is also very close to the same so we were able to press on...
I am doing some cleaning and have some very nice tires.
