Parts needed for a TBI 350

I am working on getting some better performance out of the TBI 350 on my Commando and before I go out and buy parts I thought I would check to see if anyone had some of these parts: Holley Projection intake manifold for the pre 87 heads or a Holley spread bore TBI adapter plate Block hugger...

    Radius arm questions

No way was I suggesting that they add another upper arm in addition to the radius arms but I can see how my wording wasn't clear, I was suggesting that they go with a 3 or 4 link with pan hard bar and NOT do the radius arms.

    Radius arm questions

Radius arms do twist the pinion a lot. If you have space remove the radius upper arm and (edited for RockMonkey) add an independent upper arm and it will work better for pinion tip. Also radius arms put twist on the axle when one side is up and the other is down that the links or the axle tubes...

    GMC / Chevy Axle ???

My old 72 3/4 had the standard rotation 44 up front with big hubs and an HO72 rear (looked like the big brother to the Ford 9 inch). Some of the 72 3/4 tons also came with Dana 60 rears, none had the 14 bolts that I am aware of. The 60s were on two wheel drive models, at least they were on the...

    TBI mileage and power question

The commando passed emissions with ease and the plugs look like the engine is getting a clean burn so I am perplexed as to why it is so low. I would be pleased with 15-17 on the highway. I did make the commando a bit heavy with the skid plates, roll cage, bumpers, and such but I can't imagine it...

    TBI mileage and power question

On my maiden voyage to Moab in the Commando I got lousy mileage (10 MPG) and the power from the TBI setup was anemic. What kind of gas mileage are those of you running a TBI on a 350 Chev engine getting ? and is your power good ? The power I am getting is not much better than what I get from my...

    The Commando in Moab

I was going to name this post "Going Commando in Moab" but my kids told me that wasn't a good idea. In fact my wife bought bumper stickers that said that and she was embarrased when the kids explained it to her.

    The Commando in Moab

Thanks, The extra length does help and the flexy suspension works better than I could have hoped for. I did drag the back end a bit on the big ledges but the skid plates and rear bumper took it all it in stride. The extra weight in the back did sag my rear 2" TJ springs so I will need to find...

    The family Commando build project

It made it to Moab (see trip reports) and it performed very well. It drives down the road very well and off-road it went up everything we tried. I do have some issues that need to be solved. The first one showed up on the way down, freeway and highway driving causes more exhaust heat than going...

    The Commando in Moab

Well I managed to get the Commando finished far enough to take it to Moab for the family Moab safari. We headed out early Thursday morning and made it down without too many issues. The first trail we ran Thursday afternoon was Poison Spider which I felt would be a good shakedown run before I let...

    TBI speed sensor source

I took the suburban speedometer that I had and took it apart leaving only the optical sensor. Hopefully this will work OK till I find a better solution. I would need to find out if the Ford unit has the correct pulse count but it might work.

    TBI speed sensor source

I need to find a source of a 2 pulse per revolution speed sensor for the TBI in my Commando. I have found them on line but before I order an expensive one I wanted to find out if anyone knew of a vehicle they came on that I could look for in the yards. I could wire up a circuit to divide down...

Where did your 4x4 hobby start? (specifically lookin for pre-1980's input)

In our family 4x4 recreation started back in the late 40s when my father bought a 48 Jeep. He drove it all over especially for hunting and fishing trips. One use for the old 48 was eluding the rich kids from East high after some rotten tomatoes and eggs just happened to sail into a dance at the...

    The family Commando build project

Thanks, it is hard to miss and I was running around quite a bit in that area yesterday. I am very pleased with how it drives on the road, now I need to go wheeling. I had Teraflex check the alignment and I guess I did a pretty good job setting it up since the only thing they found was the slight...

    The family Commando build project

Its legal now !, I got safety and emissions done yesterday but had to do it in two places. Even though this rig is only a few years away from the testing cut-off it doesn't have its original motor and I had to test it at the county health department (some new rule). It blew the test away (HC...
