Yup. On mine, the front of the spring sits several inches lower than the rear. The tapered block is intended to go in wide side forward, to keep the pinion level. Just by dumb luck, installing it narrow side forward aligned the pinion angle perfectly for a CV.
Your cheap switch idea will work fine, it's how I used to wire my campers, but your theory of operation is a little skewed.

Also, if you're just doing one axle, do the REAR. An open rear, locked front, and off camber climb is an accident waiting to happen.

I've got a set of 12 bolt 4.56's I'd let go cheap. I installed them, then drove about five miles and realized they were just too low for my hiway cruiser.
