Now there is an excellent question. I absolutely agree that it was in the government's best interest to not allow a state to leave the union but what sort of "union" is it if the joining and remaining a part of it is not voluntary? Sounds a lot like slavery... which is an evil institution...

If the original gov't didn't make slaves "citizens" to begin with, then to which "citizens" are you referring? Even with that argument, there was no justification for disallow them from leaving, even if they wanted to free the slaves before or after the cession. But you can do a great many evil...
