6.0L F*rd motors....why do they "suck"?

I have one. They have head bolt issues which makes them go through head gaskets. Also, egr valves. Why would you put an egr on a diesel? They clog up and go bad on a regular basis and stick open. I just unplugged mine. My truck is on its 4th head gasket with 110,000 miles. They claim they went to a stud kit which solved the problem. I don't know about the newer trucks though.

I went threw 2-3 turbos and the hose would blow off the turbo weekly. It blew up at 35,000 miles do to the egr coming apart. All of this with no mods except cat back magnaflow. It was a 04 I wouldn't reccomend this motor to anyone it is a steaming pile of 

Cody here at work had one, he had issues with the EGR Cooler and the EGR Valve, plus the Fuel Injector Control Module. Since he sold it, it's had boost tube issues, thermostat issues, bad injectors, and a constant FICM low-voltage code.

It's an awesome truck.

wow, cheap fixes..... I've know two people with 6.4L trucks. They've both got new motors in their trucks. Under 40K miles. Injectors dropped into the cylinder.

Finding a low mile 7.3L is proving "interesting" at best.

Ouch... this almost sounds worse than the VP problem with the 24 valve cummins.

Marc - you're looking for a different truck now? I'm considering it too. Almost considering a duramax.

I'm at 215K and climbing fast. I'll need something new in a while. My truck has really been pretty good other than the CPS. I've been looking for a 80-120K mile 7.3L. That's a needle in the haystack in the biggest way. Some of the 7.3L lower mileage trucks I've driven are BEAT and I get back in my 215K mile truck and feel like it's a better truck even though it's literally got twice as many miles. My truck has really been a decent rig, it's just getting long in the tooth a little. No real issues, but just thinking about moving on a little.

I've looked at a few Dmax trucks. I still don't like the IFS (tie rod ends and idler arm issues) and the 5 passenger with every electronic gadget known to man that I'm not interested in (at least when it's integrated into my truck). There's no doubt they pull hard, though.

I want a longbed, prefer a stickshift (good luck finding that in a GM) and would like to have a manual transfer case shift.

The head bolts scare the crap out of me. The 6.0L pulls REALLY hard, but I knew there were issues. Just wanted to know what they are. There's a SUPER nice '05 dually I was looking at. Drove great, a little more than I wanted to spend, but likely worth it if the motor is worth having as F*rd makes the required fixes. Doesn't sound like something I want to deal with even though it's a nice truck.

the problems are the head stud's that can be replaced and the egr cooler and there is a delete for it now also check out http://www.thehouseofdiesel.com/ that is all he runs is the 6.0 if I would have met him before I got rid of mine I would still have it

I might have to check that out. Slim pickings out there if I'm only willing to look at 7.3L or '03-05 Dodge trucks.

My '03 Dodge meets all those qualifications, and I've had zero issues with it. Of course by truck standards it's still brand new at 47k, but it almost never leaves the garage without something hitched to the back.

I have the cheapest EGR kit. The 6.0l are good motors once you get the EGR and head studs taken care of, I also have someone that reprograms the FICM and solves those issues as well.

What's the damage (financially) to take care of F*rd's shortcomings? What kind of warranty is involved with those fixes as well. Seems like a risk to buy if I need to put a fair amount into a truck to make it worthy. They seem to run well, but they do have known issues. I had no idea there were that many.

And here I thought my 03 Dodge was the lowest milage around at 55K.

My dad has a 6.0 liter and loves it. It has almost 100k and has only had the egr problem. He gets 21-23 mpg in it. I pulled my truck home with it from cali and averaged 19 pulling a trailer with a tacoma on it.
