That just confirms that my cornering is I desperate need of some professional help  next time I see a cornering clinic I'm going to sign up!

Not true, you're an amazing rider. While everyone can benefit from clinics, i dont think your cornering technique is off. Maybe the sentinel just corners bad. There are quire a few 29ers ive ridden that are awkward in the corners.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever ridden a 29 that you consider playful? This was from some random article I read today:

That chart pretty much sums up my experience, except i find a few 27.5+ bikes can be pretty darn playful with the right geo.

The most playful bikes I've ridden all jave super short chainstays. They are:
- santa cruz chameleon (most playful bike ever for me). 27.5+. Surprisingly a lot more playful as a 27.5+ than as a 29er.
- ibis mojo 3. 27.5+
- trek stache 29+
- santa Cruz 5010 27.5
- pivot mach 5.5 27.5
- pivot switchblade 27.5+ (i haven't tried it as a 29er yet)
- yeti sb66c 26
- gt distortion 26

The only 29ers ive ridden that were kinda playful are:
- Evil followong MB
- rocky mountain instinct
- norco range

The spot mayhem isnt playful, but it's not awkward at turning. Ive ridden more awkeard 29ers than comfortable ones.

I feel like 29ers have to be leaned more than 27.5. Heres a good video ive been trying to practice:

Nice bike! That thing will be a blast. Let us know how you like it.

I bought some of the "fooker" chester knock-offs on amazon, and they're the best $25 pedals I've seen. I also love my chesters and my one-ups. The fookers feel identical to my chesters.

I pulled the trigger this weekend! I found a 2018 Instinct BC Edition in blue and black. I think its a gorgeous bike! I am excited to go play on it tomorrow I am planning on going mid morning to Eagle Mountain (its the only thing that is dry I bet).

I think I am either going to go with the OneUp Pedal or Race Face Chester Pedals.
Good looking bike, I may be biased. Love this bike and it's not the BC Edition. I'm also running chester's and they have been fine.

There’s the build thread on mtbr. Don’t need to be a member to view it.
I used a Henry James Universal jig from the mid-nineties which I had to significantly modify in order to build modern frames. I had to learn to machine stuff so I could make new fixtures. It’s been fun.

So cool! I knew there was some side of the bike world where guys are still hand building frames for fun, I've just been too afraid to look for it (fear of another hobby). Thanks for sharing!

It was kind of the next step for me. I haven't had a factory built bike since high school, but I wanted to do more than just pick parts. I wanted to do the whole thing myself. This time around I laced up the wheels, designed and built the frame and will probably paint it too.
When it's all said and done, I will have a ~$3500 hardtail. But I will have spent close to $7k after jigs, fixtures, tooling to make fixtures, torches and frame tools. Which still isn't bad considering that some people are spending $7 or 8K on bikes anyway. However, now that I'm set up to build bikes I could crank out another frame for $250-300 less paint. That's pretty economical for a nice steel frame if I don't count the 50 hours it takes me to do it. You certainly can't buy any sort of decent frame (retail anyway) for $300, let alone one with custom geometry.
Yeah, it's not carbon, but that's not always a bad thing. I have a buddy who builds his own steel frames and he is on his third front triangle on one frame. Had a couple run ins with stationary objects and buckled the main tubes, but he cut them out and brazed in some new ones. I think that's kind of cool in a world where even bikes are becoming somewhat disposable. I can tell you it's been a very satisfying experience to build this. I think my wife is starting to get jealous. She said I couldn't bring to church with me.
What's next? First, I need a new commuter bike. Then maybe a single pivot full suspension. Suspension is a whole other can of worms though.

So cool. Your geo numbers look amazing. Great work!

Any chance you can do aluminum too? I've been dying for a clone of my chameleon, but with a head angle 3* slacker.

Tess and I are thinking of heading down to St. George/Hurricane this weekend to celebrate her recovery and her first bike ride since pregnancy. Anyone want to join? We're thinking church rocks, or wire mesa, or maybe little creek mesa. She's technically not supposed to ride 'till 6 weeks after pregnancy. We'll be at 5 weeks, so we'll be taking it easy.
