Fill the 5-gallon container with water. Pour the water from the 5-gallon container into the 3-gallon container until full. Next, pour all the water out of the 3-gallon container. Pour the 2-gallons of water that were left in the 5-gallon container into the 3-gallon container. Now fill the 5-gallon container until full, and then pour the water into the 3-gallon container until it is full. This leaves you with exactly 4 gallons of water in the 5-gallon container.
