What kind of sign are you thinking of? I could make one out of steel (Thickwall large dia. tubing, one or two posts, w/ flat plate for the info). It would be a b!tch to pull something like that out if the base was cemented in and the tube (or tubes) filled too.

However, I can only think of one realistic option for the lettering, which is a quality vinyl decal on the painted sign. The drawback is people potentially scraping the letters off. Spraying clear coat paint over the letters makes it more difficult, but still can be damaged fairly easily.

On the Independence trails in CO. they have their signs laser or plasma cut into the metal. Way $$$$.

If it's made out of wood, some dumba$$ could more easily break or burn it.

Any thoughts?

One of the Members on here has an automated P-Cutter. Program what you want into the Computer & the Plasma Cutter goes to work.

So, is that what we want, plate steel with the letters cut out? Or...?? I can send a PM and see first off if it's possible & second, what it'll cost.

Hey now you're thinking like me!

At work we have some 8" pipe concreted into the ground to protect the gas meter from being run into (and they are filled with concrete too.). That would be sweet but a bit much.......

I was also thinking of a painted white 1/4" steel plate with vinyl letters. I know someone with a vinyl cutter.........

Vinyl....what a wierd word. That reminds me of a song about a vinyl strip mine.........

OH! I thought about something else.

Earlier someone mentioned something about policing the trails. Here's what we do........

Everyone has digi cameras these days right? If you catch someone littering, driving over a tree, etc. TAKE THEIR PICTURE!!

Then we'll post it on here and publicly humiliate the living piss out of them!!

That sounds like a good starting point. Sheesh, it looks like our signs are going to double as winch anchor points......

Hey let's be sure to keep this cheap/free. No point spending much at this point considering we are sort of just taking this project upon ourselves and we don't really know where this will take us........

It sounds like some of us could possibly donate materials or have hook-ups for stuff.

I don't think it will get too expensive.

I think if we try to go too cheap or cut corners, we may end up with a finished product that unfortunately might get destroyed. Hell, even one idiot with a can of paint could ruin a typical sign.

The p-cut letters are they way to go IMHO. Hopefully, someone can get that taken care of cheap (or donated?). We've got a laser guy, but that would be way too expensive.

EZ, the big pipe your talkin' about would work well, and I dig overkill and all, but may be a bit too much. I think 1 3/4" or 2" .120 DOM would be sufficient especially with concrete poured into it. :D

If the p-cut stuff doesn't work out, we've got vinyl sticker guys here on RME.

BTW, I have seen these types of signs painted a flat "olive drab" type color that blends with the terrain pretty well. Just a thought.

I can't freakin' believe it!!! When was the last time you guys saw a RS/Constrictor thread that didn't involve b!tching, crying, or silly threats? :p

This is a good thread with realistic goals. Building the basic sign or getting people to install them isn't a big deal. Tell me more about the possible CNC p-cutter hook-up. If thats an option, we're home free.

Am I getting ahead of myself here? I'm ready to make the first sign. :D

so which sign first? RS? What shall it look like, and what shall it say exaclty? I like the I dea of it having a mountain outline, at least at the top. I also have a large peice of 3/8 plate I will donate. it is about 2' x 3'.

Here are the issues I see at this point:

(1) We can't proceed until we find out whether or not the info can be p-cut.

(2) If it can be p-cut, will the machine be able to cut through 3/8". We may have to go with 1/4", and if so, do you guys think it will have strength issues? After cutting out all that text, do you think someone could beat it up. OK, so that may sound a little paranoid, but ya never know who's gonna be out there.

(3) We'll have to decide what goes on the sign, and that may detemine our size of material.

As far as what goes on the sign, I figure you guys can hammer that out. :p

What you guys/gals are trying to do is wonderful! I have often thought about these same issues time and time again.

I would love to help, My hubby works at midas and he can get some pipe if need be, Im not sure on the dimensions of the pipe but it is strong enough for exhaust so with some cement would should be fine.

I also know the owner of Steel N Fun and could possibly use his p cutter and other gadgets if need be.

I would also love to donate my time to this cause

Please let me know

you can reach me through aim= chevybiatch44

WHOA.......So we seem to have the makings of a sign and I really haven't had to moderate much (if any, to be honest).

I'd like to think the Constrictor trail would be the first to get a sign. It seems more 'threatened'?.....There might be enough material for two signs, but let's start with the one and see how that goes. We may want to rethink things after a month or two.

So let's Hammer out some Text....

Proposed Sign Text.

"
Welcome to Constrictor
Locking Differentials and 35" or greater tires recommended
Body Damage Possible

Please respect others rights to the trail and leave it as close as possible to how you found it.

Litter cleanup is encouraged

Have Fun

"

There will obviously need to be some technical things discussed to see if that is too many words or whatever. Any input on that?

Any adjustments to the text?

Does anyone forsee a problem with the BLM concerning the signs?

Do we want to contact with them and ensure that they support the idea?

I know that this can both ways... sometimes it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission... :D

Besides the materials of the sign, the placement will also make or break the durability of it. If we can mount in in a spot that not only doesn't attract attention from those not on the trail, but also is in a place that you can't get a vehicle to (so people don't ram it/run it over).

This brings us too another dilema, how are we going to place it in the ground? Manually dig holes? Then the sign is only as strong as the dirt around it...

Did someone mention they have an auger/post hole digger?

Hey Greg and RME guys,

I talked to the boss and we would be happy to cut the signs for a good cause. The amount of lettering would be limited by the size of the sign, of course, and still be large enough to be read from the vehicle. KISS would apply here. I like the idea of shaping the top as mountains (RME logo). So basically I am saying that if you guys can come up with the materials, I will cut them for free.

Corey

P.S. Yeah, I know my link doesn't work. My web host was hacked and he is having a hard time getting it back together. Hopefully it will be up soon.

Awesome :D

As much as I like the idea of it having a picturesque mountain scene along the top, does anyone think that it may make it look "unofficial" and "non-authorative"? I was thinking of a p-cut sign that we paint FS brown. Possibly get a BLM sticker to place in one of the bottom corners?

Awsome Corey, thanks for lending a hand.

If anyone needs some high quality brackets cut, get ahold of ONCORB. He can crank them out, production style! :D

I have no problem with a square or rectangular sign, I was thinging the same thing. Make it look official, like a BLM sign would.
