"herjeep" safety&emi saga.......the nightmare continues

I hope everyone gets there issues resolved. However, has anyone been harrased/had registration revoked etc when the vehicle is legal?

Doesn't seem like it.

I know games are played to get vehicles passed, be it safety or emmissions. Obviously UHP does as well! However, the laws and requirements needed to make a vehicle street legal apply all the time, not just at the time of the inspection. UHP knows that, too.

So, who here cares enough to do more than gripe?

If the laws are unreasonable, too strict, stupid or whatever, do something about it!

Work with or put together some 'advocacy group', and find a member of the state legislature, discuss the concerns with them and see if a reasonable compromise can be reached. I would suggest starting the process after this year's session ends so it can be studied and details worked out before hand.

Having been involved with legislative issues the past couple of years, I can say that I have been pleasantly surprised at how willing to work with people the members of the legislature can be.

My biggest problem with the law is that it seems to be biased. Mildly modified Jeeps are getting flagged or written fix a tickets - who was it a year or two ago that had a stock XJ get a fix it ticket on the highway? I see so many lifted to the sky super duties on the road. They are lifted (8-12") way more with way more tire exposed than we have. How does that work? Larger/same size tires and more lift, but we're getting hounded?

I have no problem following the law if everyone else has to as well. If they are goign to enforce it with me, then they need to enforce it clear across the board. I feel in UT they do not. However, so far I feel WA does - even though I've been pulled over more times up here than in UT. Up here all of those big trucks also have big mudflaps.

Agreed that it must be enforced equally. But, to play devil's advocate, how do we know they are not? Same with the low riders.

We hear the complaints of the crowd who visit RME.

Any lawyers here? I want to know the whole on the trailer-get's a ticket story. There is no way that a cop can come to your driveway and write you up if you are midway through a project and forgot to pull the license plate off at the exact time that it became illegal.

I've heard that if you are transporting a vehicle on a trailer it has to be registered. Either OHV or street, otherwise you need a transport permit/license like the car dealerships use. Also in Sandy if you have a vehicle that is not licensed it has to be parked in the garage or under the car port or you get a ticket. They have been going around my area a bunch handing out tickets trying to make some revenue.

This is just my STREET educated opinion. If you don't want to get hassled, do even remotely look suspicious. I used to run the questionable mods, tints etc... I have since decided that it’s not worth the hassle. Don't give these cops that were bullied in high school an opportunity to get revenge on us that were cool or at least those of us that think we were cool back then.

I met GOAT the other day when he dropped off the tires to Jesse. GOAT's truck is a great example of what I am talking about. He drives a really nice, clean looking Ford truck. It’s got some goodies on it but it doesn't attract attention in a negative way. My truck is the same way; it has a leveling kit, 22" wheels, legal tint, exhaust, chip, intake, etc... Keep it legal, is it really that hard to choose tint that is legal? Don't give the picked on kids reasons to pull you over. If you’re from out of state, no big deal, excuse yourself for not knowing our dumb laws and move on.

I have a friend that was a cop and would go ridding with him. They look for a reason to pull you over. If you smoke, don't throw your smoke out the window, it’s a great reason to pull you over.

The last two years I have taken my vehicles to the Davis County Emissions just for this reason so I can pull the "your people passed it, not anyone else" card if I need to. Last year my jeep passed just fine, this year my front bumper was too narrow. It was the same Expedition One bumper I ran last year. I asked them to show me the change in the law making it not pass this year. They overlooked it they said. Okay, now it gets extensions that can come off at the trail. When I lifted it and put bigger tires on it I also put wider fender flares on it. Not a big deal.

There is a really nice yellow TJ running around Kaysville that has been stretched and widened. He has fabed some mud flaps that normally would be ugly but because of his jeep, it looks really cool. If some knows the jeep I am talking about, get some pics posted. What I am saying is, make it legal or at least your tow vehicle so they have NO reason to pull you over.

I have lived in other states; I like it here so I will comply. Do I like it, not really but I will comply.

You're right.... However, in UT I never saw the big lifted trucks trying to be compliant, but you see the littler Jeeps with 9" fender flares and big ol mud flaps. How often do you see the bigger trucks getting pulled over compared to the littler Jeeps. This is obviously a one sided topic, but like the next guy said - keep it legal and you won't have issues. They are obviously not legal, but if they are choosing to keep driving that way, then they should be plate less as well.

My tow rig at the time brought uneeded attenion to me, thats nto the issue, the state trooper was really nice and proffesional, its the young buck sheriff deputy that was being rude... I was more then nice too, and i still kept getting asked about it..

WHen i got home i went and talked to my neighbor a clearfiled city cop of 20yrs, and he said that you can modify the crap out of your wheeler, tow it to moab, tow it to the trail head and wheel it. then come home and throw fender flares and mudflaps on it, and its good to go. just because its modded and trailered doesnt mean you cant have your plate on it.. I even called the dmv yesterday just to make sure they didnt revoke it.. I guess they were just warning me..

That's f-ing Utah for ya. I have been working on getting mine to fly under the radar. The UHP say that my frame height is 1/4 too high and that I need to remove the lift and put the stock components back on it. HA
I try to follow the little laws just like everyone else, however this is just stupid.

My neighbor is a davis county sheriff and she told me the whole documentation line. Is a bunch of B.S. and there is no way in her computer to flag anyone. Don't hold me to it though thats just what i was told.

The first time I got nailed by the uhp, I was driving down state street in Orem and I had a soa w/ 35's ( this was before the change in lift laws ) The uhp picked me apart and then took my plates,(hp officers son had a 1/2 ton truck w/ 10 inches of lift and 40's w/ no mud flaps or flares) told me I would have to have it inspected at a inspection station, I did that and went to the dmv to get them back and that is where they told me it had to be inpected by their uhp inspector, then I had to get a hold of him to come by my house to look at it, he came up to the house and was pretty cool about it, signed it right off and left, haven't been bothered to much now w/ full width and 37's on a wrangler, but I don't drive it all the time either.

To get inspected now, I put little dinky tires and wheels on it and mudflaps and the inspection station takes pic so it covers their butts

Strange, we were talking about this very subject at work today.

The best part is how SERIOUS this issue of compliance has become in po-dunk utah. Mudflaps and fruity extended flares on hells revenge ETC :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Every time I'm behind a wrangler with giant flares and mudflaps, it just makes me shake my head. Right after that, some moron in a diesel lifted to the moon spews black soot, and crosses three lanes of traffic. Johnny law is nowhere in sight.........just like when you really need them.

Party on

Dude, if you had a diesel you wouldn't need to be behind Kiel bitching about his huge truck spewing black soot at you.
