Last time I got my jeep inspected it was a long ordeal, one of the things they failed me on was not having a third brake light on my jeep that is over the spare tire, even though it never had one when i bought the jeep. Another thing they failed me on was because the inspector looked at my control arm and saw that my tire rubbed it. When he said that I got in my jeep and showed him by turned the wheel all the way both ways and it wasn't even't close to touching. I told him that it must be when I am off road with it flexed all the way. He told me that he didn't care and I needed to fix it. So I bought a can of spray paint and painted it and took it back. It was a different guy there and he said it was just fine.

When it comes down to it, they are saying you "lack integrity" by doing your job the way it's supposed to be done. That's defamation of character and totally uncalled for. I'd definitely file a complaint against them with those charges. I wonder if they will harass you after that, but they just can't go around pulling that sh#t when they don't get their own way. Sorry to hear it and good luck.

call up the UHP and ask for the IA department and let them know what went down and they will investigate the situation and do what they think is best (most time just a talking to the officer) but at least it shows that officer that he is being watched and that people are not going to put up with his attitude.

Sue being a dispatcher for one of the local agencies get these calls all the time and the IA department does take them seriously.

I agree would be the right way to handle it. Needs follow-up, done proper and professionally.

Is a very interesting set of events.

Did the shop get busted to passing vehicles that shouldn't? How the UHP got involved, tracking down vehicles etc is very strange.

I agree.. Especially such a short time after you just had yours inspected...

....Maybe they were casing the place, saw yours leave, went in found that they passed it and found you. Dunno... Definately file a complaint.

They said it still needed reverse lights, rear reflectors and the rear bumper wasn't wide enough. They said it should not have passed and I needed to give them my safety certificate back.
Reverse lights are not required, snap on plastic caps (no structure) extending the bumper 2 inches on each side would make it legal and reflective lenses in the tail lights. That sounds pretty nit-picky to me but they didn't stop there-they came and searched him out! This was not a traffic stop, they weren't hanging out at the inspection station-this was somewhat of a safety inspection "sting" operation! That's like sending the swat team because there is an 18 year old with a cigarette!! If that is not nit-picky than I don't know what would be.

Okay I guess I missed something. Did he make all the repairs they said he needed to to pass? What happened to the palce he took it to?

He fixed everything they noted and it passed. But then the UHP caught up to him and said the shop shouldn't have passed him. Nothing really to do with him should have been the shop

Exactly and that's the part that I bet bothers the most. He tried it, it failed with a list. He fixed the list and it passed like it should.

To me everything he did was very ethical and on the up and up. He very easily could have abused his authority and had his shop pass it or etc.

Exactley. He did what he was supposed too. But where he works won't let them e/i it through them, it's a conflict of interest. This is a good reason for that policy lol. But they were just being ignorant SOB's.

Thanks for the feedback and support.

My boss said that he would have been just as upset as I, if it were him. He wasn't worried about my integrity and agreed that they were way out of line. Word spread quickly at work (as it always does) and nobody could believe it.

As a manager, I will not put an associate in a position that they feel obligated to pass an inspection because it is a coworkers vehicle. Thus sending them off-lot. That is what the officers could not understand, even after my GM told them the exact same thing.

Apparently the inspection station was being watched and my rig was pretty obvious. If they had failed it a second time, I would have made the corrections and sent it back.....again.

I'll deal with the HP on monday after I get back from seing NIN in Vegas:greg:

1.My cherokee was failed because the heater fan/ blower only worked on the high position, it needed all speeds..

2. back in the days when i was doing SI's, I passed a truck that was questionable, the HP pulled into the lot as the owner of the truck was pulling out, he stoped the truck and asked the owner if it was just inpected, then asked the owner to pull it back into the shop, I had to do another inspection while the HP watched, it passed every thing but bumper height, they let the truck go with the inspection, pulled my licence for a month and did an audit on all the paper work at the shop. The HP officer was a dick for sure, maybe it was my additude.
me being only 20 years old i was glad to get out of doing inspections for a month, back in the late 70's and early 80's an inspectin was only $5.25, and commission on $5. was an issult for the amount of time that it required,i didnt give a crap about the jerry springer ordeal, the shop owner didnt have the same outlook, i must have been good at something because i didnt get fired, i think it was because i only made minumim wage + a small commision, you get what you pay for.

I feel like I am missing the part of the story about how the cops knew where to show up in the first place. Did they follow it back to your work, and then hours later show up again to question you? I am assuming the Jeep is not registered to your work so they could not read the plate and then get the address to drive to, nor do I see why they would do that. They did seem out of line, but there seems to be missing info here.

The only thing I can assume is they were watching the inspection shop. The invoice at the station for the inspection is billed to my work, not to me and that is how they followed the jeep back. The form they printed for me to sign had Jenn's and address name on it so I wasn't even part of the equation until I told them I sent it there.

Honestly, I think they were looking to make some sort of bust and come after my work, which is a very large company. I am not sure what else they could have been thinking of other than money and looking good for their boss. When none of that panned out, they made it personal.

Even though they seem to be out of line in a number of places in my opinion, I am thinking that the only thing you can complain about is the comment to your boss. I hope when you report it something happens, at least a reprimand.
