Perhaps we should start a thread about our 'youthful' experiences...

I plead the fif! FIVE! 1,2,3,4, fiiiif! Anything you say! FIIIF! ...

(dave chappelle reference)

Started when I was 17 and got my first 5.0 mustang. By 20 I had a daily driven 5.0 that ran 11:90s on the motor in the 1/4.

not good.

I got a job at Super Shops my senior year in HS... it was my "job" to race on the weekends... at least I thought it was! :greg:

My Camaro was a mid-12 second car with a nicely built SBC. Dart Sportsman heads & intake, Erson roller cam & rockers, etc. We were usually street racing, occasional weekends at RMR to see what times everyone was running.

I once got pulled over after (the security guard said) 'well over 110 MPH' in a 35 MPH zone. I was racing a mild 5.0 Mustang.... beat 'em by 7 car lenghts at the 1/4. That was an expensive ticket... ended up getting a lawyer due to some... other related stuff. :guilty:

Then there was the time when I pulled out of the Super Shops onto State Street in SLC one evening in the dark. There was water in the gutter and I got the car totally sideways with the throttle on the floor... steering wheel was at the lock. I carried the car sideways for about 150 yards down State St, then backed off and straightened it out. Then the Sheriff turned on his lights... I pulled out about a 1/2 block ahead of him.:rofl: Exhibition of Speed for that one.

That's just the beginning... no need to go into the stories about loosing cops after a race. :bryson:

I'll have to find some pictures. I don't remember a lot from that era. (I do remember having to buy a new tire about a month after buying new rears. Someone challenged me to blow up my 10 bolt. It held together, the tire did too, but I used up at least 1/3 of the tread in one burnout and dug a hole in the asphalt at the shop I worked at (maybe a 3/4-1" deep:ugh:).)

one red mustang

I think the thread has been started,
1980,Price Utah, 1AM in the morning going home behind Smiths Food King, junior year at Carbon high, 1969 mustang Mach 1 ( still have it :greg:!!!!) speed limit 35, passed a car, it was doing 30,as I blow by it doing ? MPH, I see why the car was going slow; a cop was hiding at the old folk’s home parking lot. That year I was taking care of the house next door that was vacant and had the garage to use, as I came into the neiborhood I had the auto door going up, did a starsky and Hutch into the garage hit the down button, the cop was getting close so I jumped up and pulled the power cord to the door with only 15 inches left to close, the cop didn’t see it an flew on by!!!!!!!
Now how many bright red 69 mustangs do you think were in Price ut in 1980? ONE.
Two days latter in the high school parking lot every cop in town was checking out how clean my mustang was.......A week latter I was telling the judge I didn’t know there was a cop behind me as I was driving home.............. $100.00 for speeding. Fleeing from the Police dropped because they never could prove I knew I was being followed. The best part is my parents never found out. This is the day before computers, so even the insurance agent didn’t know for a year.

I had a similar experience in my 66 Mustang, going one way on Riverdale Road in Ogden at a high rate of speed, cop going the other hits lights and flips around. I head up into a neighborhood with the cop about a block and a half behind me. I pull into a garage, no idea who's, and kill the lights. Watch the cop go by then a minute later drive back by slowly. Waited about 20 minutes and headed home on the back roads.

Then there was the two tickets in 4 hours in Nevada on my way to Reno in my Porsche. Last one was 120 in a 60. blah blah blah....

stopped by the store and picked up some sweet-@ss reflector tape, license plate and reverse lights. I also got the name of another place to take it to.

My plan is to make it legal, get it passed, registered and park it for a while. If officer cluck cluck immediately shows up to re-inspect again, I'll be forced to tell him "gosh officer, I just dont know where the jeep is. It's not mine you know. You may have to drive around and look for it".

Better get started. it's a big city

Licence plate light and reverse lights not required-but I understand wanting to comply to avoid harrasment.

The timeless debate, the law doesn't always correlate with the safety inspection manual. In this case the law clearly states you have to have an operating license plate law. While it might not be a pass/fail issue at the inspection station, its absolutely something they can write you a ticket for.

Law:
41-6a-1604. Motor vehicle head lamp, tail lamps, stop lamps, and other lamps -- Requirements.

(c) Either a tail lamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration plate.

On the other hand is beadlocks, while the safety inspection manual says to "fail if present", there is no law actually naming them as illegal. So I believe their is decent case for a person that passes their safety inspection with regular wheels but then is later ticketed for beadlocks as the vehicle code doesn't outlaw them. There is a "catch-all" situation though, a ticket can be written for whats considered a "safety" issue, however again I would like to see an officer show evidence that a beadlock is unsafe.

Goat, that sucks to hear about your safety woes, sounds like the shop you went to should be avoided in the future too. No sense doing business with a place thats got the heat all over them (following their customers home). I believe the Highway Patrol has an enforcement division aimed exactly at vehicle code enforcement. I don't know if that's all they do but at least that's what they specialize and are trained in.

Like is rough when you're 18 & have a built muscle car. :D

Too true. My kids will NOT have a vehicle in high school like I drove (1948 Chevy pick-up, lowered with a 327). Faster than I was smart at that age, and the guy who did the work had not up-graded brakes, steering etc to match the power. Not a very safe rig.

Of course, as I see it sit unused in my dad's driveway , oh how I wish I could have it back!

I would absolutely file a complaint about the officer. He has no right to speak to your boss about your "integrity", or be in any way disrespectful to you after he approached you at your job. that's near harassment if you ask me and I think the cop deserves a slap on the wrist.
