The more these shootings happen the more that I favor increasing gun control laws.
How about every one that is mentally and physically capable of carring a firearm has to. Goverment issued. Must spend 2 hours every 6 months at a range training on how to use said firearm.

Never said it would. But if the janitior, princiable, teacher, or some one could do something other than run this story would probably have a different outcome.

Crap sorry I misread your post :-\ I agree. If there were a select few in every school that would receive routine training and carried a firearm (or even a taser) this may have had a very different outcome. I don't think the majority of staff members are cut out for this sort of thing and maybe that's where a full-time on-site officer comes in? From what I gathered the police force wasted no time in getting there but being 100% helpless/defenseless for those few minutes until they arrive doesn't seem like the answer here. I don't know what the answer is :(

The more I read about the use of handguns vs bear mace in the back-country, I would think that bear mace would be very a effective tool for a teacher to have in situations like this. Bear mace has a wider path with instant results, and even if a student were close enough to the perpetrator to get sprayed in the process they would be fine after a few hours. A nervous woman(I say woman because the majority of teachers are women) holding a handgun has a very small margin of error when holding one to hit their target, thus increasing the chances of a stray bullet injuring a student. The bear mace would be a logical alternative. As for more/tighter "gun control", it will not help much because most of the guns used in school shootings were not attained legally in the first place.

I have been doing a bit of reading on it and the bear mace works much better than a handgun in close quarters, stops a bear in its tracks compared to most handguns that take 2-3 rounds to take it down, and if the mace strays to bystanders it is easily treatable compared to a stray bullet.

So, it turns out that I went to school with the mother of one of the kids killed yesterday. I have been thinking of her since I found out, and it is horrible. What a hell to live with.

There is something else that works almost as well.. Wasp and hornet spray. It wont kill, stops you dead in your tracks, and sprays a narrow stream for 20 feet. The problem with mace is even the sprayer can be affected by the fumes from it. How often have you sprayed wasp spray and been stopped by the fumes. Directly in the face it will stop you.

The Oregon mall shooting got me thinking about the fact that I haven't been carrying lately because it's against my company policy. Yesterday I bought a small 9mm for work. I refuse to be helpless to defend myself or the life of another because of policy. The gun store was packed.

My coworkers have been robbed, stabbed, and beaten while sleeping in there truck. Monday morning, someone sucked 25 gallons out of my truck while I slept with my head directly above the fuel cap.

This is definitely a tragedy, but what the result will be is more gun control laws/rules. Stories like this make me want to get a concealed even more, but in places like schools, you still cant have them in the premises, so it is useless. I personally think that teachers should be allowed to be able to have a concealed (if they go through the classes) in the classroom. They could possibly prevent or hinder tragedies like this.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in Utah one can ccw At public schools. I carry every day to UVU, as do a few of my classmates. I had one class last fall where there were at least three of us that carried. This semester, one of my teachers carried. We talked carry guns on a few occasions.

And I carry at every function we attend at my son's elementary school.

State sponsored schools, Yup. Private schools can bar them.

I think Morgan Freeman has summed it up nicely...

“You want to know why {these shootings keep happening}. This may sound cynical, but here’s why. It’s because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he’ll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.
CNN’s article says that if the body count “holds up”, this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer’s face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer’s identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don’t sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.
You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

My sentiments exactly. I'd rather be alive and looking for a new job than dead with a job still there.
