I've wanted to get a project like this going for awhile now, and with the new racks that Utah Powder Coatings is crankin out, I saw my opening.

Utah Powder Coatings is stock piling their new roof racks down at thier shop in Provo. Since these racks are customizable at 6" incriments, I had a 42x24" rack with 2" high sides running the length built for my interior cargo rack.

Here's a shot of their basic rack right after welding.. So not cleaned up, and pre powder-coating..

Here's a slew of XJ racks in their most basic form, awaiting the next step of welding the side/basket pieces on. IIRC these are 3x4.5'..

Some progress Friday night... Rob and I are building a mounting system that will bolt to the OE utilitrack in the Xterra. It stands 17.5"s tall to clear majority of coolers and my action packer. The rack will bolt to the mounting system. I'll secure camping gear to the rack, and maintain easy access to cooler/storage without having to constanly move crap around.

Once this project is complete we'll be replacing the OE roof rack on the Xterra from the wet box back..

Looks great! Just a bit curious how you bent the square tubing? Do they make a sqare die for a manderal bender?

Great work.

Still bare metal, and still needs a final run through with the grinder..

We're going to build some beefier, metal rings to replace the plastic OE ones..

People underestimate the use of conduit. Its strong (for what it is), light weight and most importantly... CHEAP!

Here is a really old skool pic for ya. I built an entire cooler rack out of EMT. Never had a problem unless I rolled backwards and smashed it.

something similar would sure be nice in my xj, seems like there is never enough room back there and try as i might to organize things for trips it seems like it all ends up in a pile :-\

is the cargo net you have just for keeping crap from rolling out of the back? that would also be nice, my coolers and gear were all over the place in moab this year. in the old buggy i just ratchet strapped everything to random tubes :busted:

The net really just seperates the rear cargo compartment with the seating area. This keeps stuff from flying up in an accident or rollover.. Or just bouncing into someone's head down a rough road.

BUT, the net actually assisted in holding the NATO can into place which was pretty cool.

You can get the cargo nets from Raingler. They are high quality and come recommended by me. I want to pick up a full length one for my Xterra, and also 1-2 cargo nets to put over gear and strap them down.. These nets also work great on roofracks.

If you're interested, we'll look at doing a mounting system for the XJ next.
