Help me understand the coolant filter. Inlet hoses are small, and obviously aren't able to flow a ton of coolant. Are they inline with the heater core? where do they tie in/filter.

Coolant filters are typically installed in bypass with the heater hoses (6.0's could be different but the idea is the same)---meaning coolant flows through your heater core and back into the engine as normal, but a small amount of coolant is diverted or 'bypassed' through the coolant filter instead of flowing through the heater core. Coolant filters are not used inline or in high flow hoses for several reasons. For one the media is too fine and it would restrict flow, and as a bypass unit if the filter did plug up it would have no negative effect on cooling the engine, egr, oil cooler, etc. Over time all of the coolant in the engine will pass through the coolant filter.

Again I can't speak for the 6.0 kits but I found the shutoff valves and such add complexity and are one more thing to potentially fail. Ymmv. You'll spill a bit of antifreeze regardless when you change one. Just get whatever kit uses a Napa 4070 filter.. These filters are dirt cheap and available at all the local Napa stores. Change them often at first. There's still a chance your oil cooler will clog up before the filter does..

Fwiw I think all modern diesel engines should have a coolant filter. I cannot believe these trucks don't come with them as standard equipment

I bought the ebay kit I linked earlier. From what I can tell they are the same kits used by sinister and XDP, but without the engraving. The secondary part number even matched the sinister part number.

I am hopeful of a good truck.

Next issue: Turbo lag. This truck has it bad. I thought that maybe the turbo vanes were stuck, and not allowing low speed boost, but my gauge tells me I am getting positive pressure, even at idle.
I DON'T want to run a tuner in the truck. I prefer reliability over performance, and if I had a tuner I would 'play' with it, and that would lead to full race all the time.
I have a buddy with an older tuner that plugs in for the tune, then is removed. Would this be a good option for just a little extra help?

Leave it alone and drive it. So what if it takes a second to spool up. My old 7.3 used to go about 30' before it would break the tires loose when I mashed the throttle to the floor.

The problem that I have is that I go to pull out in traffic, especially turning left in front of others at a light, and the truck does not move quick enough to be safe. I'm in the intersection before the boost launches me out of the way. Even though I make it through fine, the persons that see me in their lane do not know I am going to shoot off like a rocket just before they impact me.. So they get freaked out, lay on the horn, hit brakes, etc. If I wait for 'enough room' to pull out, the people behind me get mad and honk.
So it's catch 22 either way. :(

I had something similar originally typed as well.. Knowing it would be the next statement.

I agree.. But on the other hand, I get way pissed sitting behind someone who wont take a chance to go. I don't want to be that guy.

Mine used to have the lag you speak of. There is a busy 2 way a few block from my house. I had my life flash before my eyes a few times right before the rocket boosters kicked in and saved me. I can't remember if you had head studs put in with the rebuild. If so, get an SCT tuner and buy tunes from innovative Diesel. They tune for longevity but with reduced lag. I have been running an STC with canned tunes for two years I this truck without an issue. I run the race mode when empty and the tow tune when towing. You just have to drive it like an adult. If you cant do that, get used to the lag.

Totally Awesome
Mine has a different wheel on the turbo that really gets rid of the lag. I've driven stock versions. Mine hauls arse after it gets to 1000 RPM. I'm. Not sure what kind of wheel it is. It was installed before I bought it. I have no tuner on mine either.

Does yours still have a catalytic converter? That could probably cause lag.

I think my truck is done. I hope to pick it up tomorrow.... and I sold a 4-wheeler tonight, so I will be bringing home a Flatbed also :)

I need under mount tool boxes for the bed. The bed store wants $350/each  Ebay wants $89 for aluminum boxes. I am worried about quality for the ebay items. I'll have to keep looking.

Catching up a bit where you were talking about turbo lag. On my '07 that I had a bit ago I felt the same way initially. I was worried about turning left in front of people and not being able to get out of the way. I scared myself pretty good coming home from the grocery store right after I bought it thinking I was going to get myself t-boned. Really though I got used to it after a few weeks of driving it and never needed to address it. You really haven't driven it much right? Give it a month of driving and see if it is still a problem.

Picked it up today. Oil temps were about 202 on the freeway, and went down to about 197 on surface streets. Always about 6-10 above the coolant temps.

Installing coolant filter tonigh.

Flatbed didn't come home with it. My wife gave me some speech about a mortgage payment or something like that...

Here is an update to my miserable life..

Got the truck on Friday. Shop says it took 3 attempts to get a clean cooler in without it clogging. Says it is good to go, system cleaned, and temps within range. I drove it home, temps stayed within range. I (well, Derek mostly) immediately put a coolant filter on. Next morning I headed out to Knolls. I didn't even make it to tooele before temps were 35 degrees different again. Made it to knolls and home.
Monday morning I decide that I am going to flush the cooling system myself, to make sure it gets done right.
Pull the filter:

Yikes.

I drained the radiator, and surprisingly it was very clean... like almost reusable clean. Just a few small floaties in the top of the catch bucket.

I took the degas bottle off, and poured it out:

I stuck a hose into the heater core hoses, and ran the truck for a while, sticking the garden hose into different hoses on the truck, just to try to wash it out a little.
I then filled with water, ran it until hot, and drained. I got some dark colored water, but no real amounts of anything.

I re-filled with water, and added a coolant flush chemical. Ran it until hot, drove around, then let it idle for an hour or so. I drained it, and got fairly clear water, with a little grainy flow at the very end.

This photo was taken with the truck at about 170/coolant temp. Even with the thermostat closed, I have always had flow on other vehicles when running. shouldn't there at least be a little water coming out??
IMG_5969[1].JPG

When the truck was at 190+ I pulled the hose while the truck was running, and only had a minimal flow. I would expect it to be gushing like old faithful.

I drained it all, and filled with coolant as it was getting dark now.

It didn't solve any of the temp issues :(

HOWEVER. I know the cooling system in now clean. If I get any more oil inside the degas bottle, I will know that the cooler is bad, and he will need to replace it again.
The shop says they have a tool to back flow the oil cooler with pressure.. So I will most likely have them do that, and flush the system again.

Someday, somehow, I will have a truck.

Wow, it's like all the horror stories of the 6.0 are haunting you.
Hope you get it going right. I've got a hook up on coolant if you need... The good stuff ain't cheap

I've put less than 100 miles on the truck since the flush, and even with the filter and starting to get more oil in the coolant.
looks like round 4 of the cooler replacement is in order. What a joke.

I have been very impressed with the shops willingness to warranty their work.. but I would prefer to not be using that warranty, and be using the truck.

Is that oil or mud coming out of the degas bottle? Sorry to hear this Brian. Are they putting Ford oil coolers in?

That was an oil, crud mix coming out of the bottle.

The filter must be doing a good job. I noticed only a slight oil residue in the degas bottle.. but today I took the filter out of the loop, and by the time I got to Ogden, the degas was full of crud.

The shop has the truck again, and is going to replace the oil cooler.. again.

I am seriously thinking an external cooler would be worth while. BPD makes a real spendy one.. but there are other, cheaper options.

Anyone have experience with cooler delete/block?

On a much happier note, I picked out and paid for a new CM flatbed today :)
