I asked the shop about a coolant filter. He said they always leak and are expensive to change. However after seeing the picture you posted, I would tend to agree that having one is worth while.

I can't speak for the 6.0 specific kits like Glockman posted, but I have had zero issues with mine over the course of several years. No leaks whatsoever and if I catch Napa's biannual filter sale the filter is around $7.. Dirt cheap. Do the 6.0 guy's use SCA's (supplemental coolant additives)? If so you can buy the napa/wix filters with the SCA's in them which is really convenient.

This is what I am using maybe it would work on your engine/truck too? $42+ filter http://www.amazon.com/Wix-24019-Filter-Mounting-Base/dp/B000CSINYU I used stainless fittings and installed it bypass style in my heater hoses. Even without shutoff valves spillage is minimal when changing the filter.

Yes delta is temp difference. If you're not egr deleted you will always see 7 degrees difference. Anything under 15 is fine. Under a load like pulling a trailer uphill you will see the difference grow. As you introduce heat to the oil it takes a minute for the radiator to catch up. But it should stay under 15. I've had five 6.0 and this has been my experience with all of them with good oil coolers, meaning not plugged with coolant debris.

6.0 do not use sca's . My filter has been on for almost a year and no leaks. The filter I just bought was a Napa 4070 and was around $10. The filter kits was $150.
With a fresh start like you have and the money you put in, a coolant filter is a drop I the hat for protection it gives you. Like I said, Oil coolers are around $400. You could buy a few filters for that much.

Totally Awesome
I use Final Charge Global antifreeze in mine. It's very good. No silica in it or other crap to clog up the system. Should be good for 300k miles with a good coolant filter. It's a bit pricy. It won't gel up like the Ford coolant. Get rid of the Ford crap antifreeze if you have it. Its not good.

So this would be bad, Eh?
Ford says 230 is in 'alarm' temps.
I am having a rough night :(

So, a plugged/blocked oil cooler means the egr is no longer getting coolant as well, yeah? The oil cooler is brand new, less than 200 miles. I have a difficult time thinking it can be clogged.
What are other possibilities going on here??

Park with the noise facing uphill. open the coolant reservoir, and let it idle for awhile until it gets up to operating temperature.

I've had mine completely empty after having to get all the oil out of the cooling system. I filled mine up in the driveway which has a steep hill to it. After I got it up to temp, I kept topping it off until it was full. I have yet to lose any since September.

Put a damn coolant filter on that thing as well.. after that much money it's a cheap investment. I got mine on ebay, it was a universal unit, but it worked. I can show you how to do it if you need. mine came with shut off valves and I built my own mount that bolts up the radiator support.

The low mark on the Reservoir is full, not sure why they did that but the owners manual should state to fill to the low mark. When cold of course.

When I added coolant to the truck when it was showing temp differences, I notice a couple little floaties in the coolant. My guess was residual left over gunk from the previous owners bad habbits. I decided to take the truck to St George over the weekend, and wanted to make sure it was ready to go. I checked the coolant again. This is what I got. Full of oil. :(

I towed the truck back up to the shop yesterday for a re-do. We'll see what they say the final cause is. My money is on the oil cooler.

Story is that the oil cooler was completely filled with gunk on the coolant tubes. New one was put in, and it filled with gunk quickly also. The entire coolant system was flushed with the rebuild, minus the heater core. Heater core was flushed, and flowed tons of debris. New oil cooler going in again, with clean coolant system.
I asked why the coolant had oil in it, as just a plugged cooler shouldn't leak. Shop says it takes just a little debris to quickly wear a hole in the fins on the oil cooler. oil is higher pressure than coolant, therefore flows oil into coolant.

Looks like Chad and his filter idea are getting more and more important.

Help me understand the coolant filter. Inlet hoses are small, and obviously aren't able to flow a ton of coolant. Are they inline with the heater core? where do they tie in/filter.

for example..

How is it filtering by being connected on a 'T' to the overflow?

There is a big difference in prices for the kit. I am happy to buy once cry once in this situation, but it seems like the kits are all the same, but badged different. for example, this is identical to the one chad linked to, minus the custom name on the top of the aluminum head..

Is there a quality difference that I am not seeing between these products?
