Lack of Patriotism

Well, I went ahead and changed it. The argument has been made, and opinions voiced.

I doubt my current one will arouse the same knee-jerk reaction, which says much.

That said, I'm not out to just piss people off, and I don't have any issues with anyone who didn't like it. And as we're not at a point where I need to ramrod the point down anyone's throat just yet, and in the interest of respect, my flag will wait in the folder. :D

Just to be clear, it didn't piss me off, just turned my stomach and made me sad. When it comes to the flag I'm very sentimental. I'm afraid if I saw someone burning one and I was in my car, I'd run over them. Scary, eh?

The current state of our country makes me sad. :( If I saw someone burning a flag, I'd probably stop them.

I just wonder how it's going to end-- revolution in thinking, or just keep marching off the cliff.

This is what I felt when "President" Clinton refused to resign after being impeached!

I have held back my opinion, and I will remain to... to a point. LT, I have known you for years now and I know your dedication and patriotism is as strong as mine, all the way down to our Red, White, and Blue blood! You are absolutely correct by stating that the flag should never be flown in any manner other than proudly, with the stars on top, and into the wind!! (Ever Forward!!) It greatly offends me when I see anyone improperly displaying, or defacing my country's symbol; as it should every single AMERICAN!

Keep fighting the good fight and I will be there with you brother!

I really don't see how saying that this country is in major need or that we are in distress is a lack of patriotism. My belief was always that the USA was built upon being able to show what we think of the government and what we think is going on. I mean seriously without freedom of speech we may as well be a communist state. If we keep going down this road of.. you said something negative about the country you are not a patriot... then we may as well just become communists or socialist and give away all of our rights that our forefathers fought so hard to give us.

I don't think anyone would argue with you on this, just don't use the flag as part of your statement. I think that is what is trying to be conveyed.

I hope all of this discontent for our new president elect doesnt translate to two more terms of nation devision. I believe Obama is exactly what we DONT need to Fix our country, but like it or not he will be our President. We need to support him on the issues that we agree on (if any) and communicate with our elected reps as to work with him on issues that we dont agree. The hatred for President Bush and NONsupport is what I believe is the birthplace for all the troubles that our country is in now. Lets be better than that. Hopefully our nation will heal and learn that Liberalism and Socialism doesnt work, those nations that were Socialism seem to be gradually adopting the Ideas of Capitalism as we are trading places with them.

When you start putting a restriction on one type of speech then you are just opening a door to more restrictions.. Obviously it got the message across

What message exactly? If I want to dis you I don't talk about your mom. You want to dis the country, fine, just leave the flag out of it. The flag is a piece of cloth that everyone assigns their own personal significance to.

I get angry when I see people desecrating the flag however hanging the flag upside down is recognized as showing that the country is in dire distress

Since everyone assigns their own significance to the flag maybe they should recognize that their opinions are just that. And that there is a set of rules when it comes to respecting the flag and hanging it upside down is not disrespecting the flag.

The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property

The country could always be considered in "Distress" 9-11, Vietnam, Korea, Bay of Pigs, Tonken, etc. Should we just always hang the flag upside down?

If you feel strongly enough that you need to hang it upside down then yes

Next time someone sees someone or even images of people burning the flag, standing on it, wearing it, flying torn or tattered flags, letting it touch the ground. Get mad get angry ***** about it on forums but just think what a great country we live in that we can do all of this without fear of the government coming and taking away our freedom.

Opinion: This only applies to Americans anyone else doing such things should be relentlessly bombed and in the event there are survivors they should be tarred and feathered

Socialism

The pseudo-capitalism that we practice as a nation is in reality, socialism (by your definitions) by selection. Subsidies and tax breaks are elements of economic socialism utilized for the benefit of business and government at your expense. You pay for it. Without any representation, or at a minimum, your involvement. Trickle down economics doesn't work. At least, not for us (see dissolving middle class).

I listened a professor the other day talking about the economic "boom" of Utah over the last ten years. He focused on the explosion in profit and growth for big business, yet the average worker's income remained the same. Even when factoring in COLA. What was the solution? It wasn't increasing wages with a minimum reduction in profit. No, it was creative lending and here we are right now. F'ed.

It seems for most it is much easier to focus on the individual welfare recipient or the immigrant and rant how they are bleeding the country dry rather than the ones that are really banging you out. I lived on the border of Mexico and saw the results of NAFTA firsthand. I can tell you that we brought it on ourselves-_-

True socialism, communism and to a higher degree, nirvana is a fallacy. We as a species just aren't ready. Maybe someday. For now we have this evolution, food/air thing to sort out.

Does feeling this way make me unpatriotic? I don't think so. Hell, I am still moved when I hear Born in the USA (IMHO one of the best protest songs ever), and angry when I see us being divided and conquered through class warfare.

I will always admire and respect the individual sacrifices that public servants, including the military make every day. My loyalty and respect is to you, the individual.

However, dissent is critical to our survival as a nation, and that includes the right to burn the flag in protest. Even if we don't agree with it.

I will never confuse patriotism with nationalism.
