Now SamI tell us again why you sold it?

I wheeled the sh!t out of it. :greg: The frame was 3/4's cracked around the frame rails on each side.. Pretty much made it home from St George U4 event with the BudBuilt skid holding the truck together.. (didn't realise the damage was that severe till I got home).. I also owed about $6,500 on it at the time I sold it.. But, I did sell it for $7,200.. :p

I could've kept it and eventually taken all of the drivetrain/interior out of it and swapped it into a clean donor frame/body.. But then there was the owing so much money on a 20+ y/o vehicle that gets the crap kicked out of it on the weekends..

I do miss having a unique looking rig that could go just about anywhere. Was a hell of great time to wheel and drive.

... Sorry for the hijack

no problem, 'twas a worthwhile hijack. Why was the frame cracked so bad? Should I eventually do frame stiffeners??

I thought about moving the fender back but I'm sure it woudl have turned out waaaay more basterdizedt than the cutting that I did. It actually turned out pretty clean. I'm also planning on building some fender protecter bars that connect to the sliders and the rear bumper. those will cover the edge of the fender anyways, so the cut edge won't be exposed.

I'd love to eventually build a rack on the back. I already have a spare tire carrier that slides into the receiver hitch and I was thinking about going off that, and making it so that it hinges down for when I need to lower the tailgate.

I can't cut the shackles I have because The cross-piece in the middle that holds the 2 sides together is 2X2 square tubing, and it the shackle is shorter, the 2X2 will hit the frame before it fully swings towards/away from the spring while flexing.

Question: If I don't have time to swap out the ps boxes (stock for tapped) can I use the 'runner , which has the hydro assist ram all connected, without actually hooking up said hydro assist ram? -Only using the stock power steering still? (I'm under the gun to finish before Memorial day weekend so we can take it camping, but between running 2 business, a very prego wife, and not as great of wrenching skills as, let's say, bo-staff skills, I don't know if I'm gonna meet my deadline on everything.

Thanks for the input guys!

That 4runner was used and abused, simply put. The guy who built it babies it, I drove it like I stole it. I think I failed to see the cracks when they started, and it just got beat on hard. The old box frames on those trucks are pretty solid, just keep an eye out for cracks if you rally it. I rallied..

well here are some progress pics....I got the rear wheel wells cut out, taped the holes and filled the inside with foam, I put the front axle "in place" .....I don't know if this'll be ready by the weekend. :( I still have a lot to do.

I need:
Front U bolts
Driveline extended
Shackles
Brake lines

I removed the driveline from the Pink Thrasher ('84 ext cab), as it was the exact length I neeed, but the flange on the T case end doesn't match up with the flange on the auto's case. FRUSTRATING!

ANOTHER QUESTION: Can I use this without hooking up the hydro assist, even though it has the ram attached???

Ya, I actually went to Gaylon's drivelines to take him my stock DL to lengthen and I explained to him the situation, and he told me that I should be able to just drill out new holes on the T case flange to accomodate the different pattern! GREAT GUY! Saved me $125 bucks!

I'LL DEFINITELY BE TAKING MY BUSINESS TO GAYLON IN THE FUTURE!

Just a heads up Ive had a few friends w/ buggy leaf and it turned out to be the cause of them to go over on an obstacle. It becomes sprung weight and works like a sling shot w/your axle weight I only want to make you aware of this it cost them a lot of body damage And I do like your build looking good.

Ya, I thought about gaylon the other night when we were fighting the driveline but I don't think he's open at 1 am. Haha It got ya home though, right?)

Thanks for the advise about the buggy leaf! I think I'm gonna take it out afterall. My direction for this build is moving towards camping/back country with a pinch of crawling. I figurte I don't need it to do anything more than waynes world or moab rim-ish trails. I've done those plenty of times in rigs without buggy leafs, so its gonna go.

GOOD NEWS!!!!! I just drove thr runner out of the garage today for the first time in a year and a half! I didn't take pics yet but I will. I love the way it sits!! It needs a couple more leafs in the front packs but it shouldn't affect it too much. It's about 2" lower in the front anyyways.

I would have, but there is a gas leak from somewhere in the fuel injection. I need to figure that out before I take it anywhere. I started right up though and seemed to run good back and forth in my driveway! It made me reeeeally excited to get it up camping! I'm thinking this next weekend. Hopefully I can find time this week to get the bugs sorted out!

Great guy except he didn't tell you that when you load up that axle with some torque and some wheel hop along with some flex that there isn't long enough splines on that driveshaft and it will pull out. Ask me how I know.
