My Next Project: 1965 Sunbeam Alpine

UNSTUCK

Gotcha. Thanks for the heads up.

You did not miss the interior pictures. Figured you didn't want to see the interior with wires and such still hanging down.

Got the front turn signals installed last night and working. Adjusted the turn signal switch canceler. Need to stuff myself under the dash and get the wiring mess taken care of. Then just need things to dry up a bit and I'll get some pictures taken.

I guess the word has gotten out to Andy Yeager of Hot Rod Hideout that I have been documenting my experience with him. He's not happy. Says he has a lawyer. Of course, he didn't tell me this himself. He called John and talked to him about it and John told me. I sure hope I'm not the first one to have documented his work ethics and made them public. I also hope I'm not the firs that thought it a good idea to do so in the hopes of giving a would be customer more information about him.

I have been very careful to only tell facts and have tried to keep my opinions of Andy out of all of this. I'll have to go back through this and see if I did put in opinion and I'll delete it if I did. As for the facts, they speak for them selves and any potential customer that may stumble upon this thread will be able to read all this and decide for themselves if they want to do business with him.

If you are just joining us, the Andy Yeager part of this thread starts on page 11. Is it crazy that this build took 10 pages and then just the upholstery section has taken up 16 more pages? I sure hope to be able to move past this part soon. I'm so done with him. I have said this before and I'll say it again, Andy does amazing work. With us though, he did not do what we asked him to do, then he did things that were not asked of him to do, he lied to us constantly, and he was late countless times. If you're ok with all that, then he may be a good fit for you as a customer.

One thing I’ve realized is people hate it when they find out you record phone conversations. They often think it is illegal. In Utah it is not illegal for one party to record a call without the other parties knowledge or approval. He’s going to be pissed but he’s going to have a very hard time finding an attorney to actually do more than a cease and desist. And even that doesn’t mean anything because sharing your experience isn’t illegal.

You're fine. You are entitled to have your opinion and share it, especially if it's stated as your opinion. You are also entitled to post facts about it. The only way you could get in trouble is if you provably posted falsities about him and/or his business.

Just a bit of an update here. My consumer complaint was assigned to an investigator at the Division of Consumer Protection. Looks like it wont go anywhere. I filed the complaint, but because I'm not the consumer they can't/won't do anything. John doesn't really want to get involved, and if he doesn't, they will close their investigation and Andy will be free to do this again. I am more and more convinced all the time that if you want to legally rip people off, open an automotive repair shop.
I've had a few emails back and forth between the division. Here is the last one I recieved....very slightly edited...

Mr. Underhill, thank you for the information. All cases must be filed individually by the consumer involved with the transactions. You filed the complaint and would be the complainant, but not the consumer in this case. You are a witness of course, but Mr. B. is the consumer. He would have to be interviewed and provide the requested information to continue the investigation. The law you reference (Utah Automotive Repair Act) was repealed many years ago. The Division enforces the laws under the Consumer Sales Practices Act. Utah Code 13-11. (Maybe one section relating to time would fit in my case.)

At this time this is an investigation and no violations are determined until all the evidence and information is evaluated from all parties, including the rights of the business to respond.

Many of the issues raised in the complaint may be violations and many may be civil and would have to be pursued by the consumer in civil proceedings. The Division cannot provide legal advice, he would have to seek legal counsel as he determines.

Please note the Division can issue citations if violations are determined, or we may issue warnings, enter into settlement agreements, or close a case due to insufficient evidence to proceed or not violations of the law found. The Division does not shut down businesses or regulate business licenses or opening of businesses etc. That is under the Division of Corporations and DOPL.

If this business is closed we may not be able to take action against the business and personal liability against an owner or previous owner is rare.

Regarding other consumers you reference, they would need to file complaints individually and they would be investigated etc.

Absent the requested information from Mr. B., and interviews and testimony, the case may be closed without further notice.

After reading that do you get the impression that there are a lot of excuses for not doing anything? I wonder why the Automotive Repair Act would get repealed? Most of the Consumer Sales Practices Act does not apply to auto shops. Or at least it gives them ways to slip through, so it seems. Overall it's pretty disappointing.

On the brighter side, I took the car to the British Field Day car show last Saturday at Liberty Park. It was a good time. I didn't take many pictures but the car straight up killed it there. They didn't do any awards, but I'm sure it was probably top 10 out of 167 cars there. I got there late so I just pulled into the grass and parked in the first spot I found. I didn't realize it, but it just happened to be right in the middle of the Utah Austin-Healey car club! Originally they weren't too happy about me parking a Sunbeam right in the middle of them, but they lightened up a bit after it brought crowds of people to their area. There were a few Land Rovers there so maybe some of you were at the show as well. I should have taken more pictures.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
The end of an era has come. I feel like part of my life left me last night. John came last night and picked up the Sunbeam. He shared with me the very first picture he took of the car when he bought it and put it on his trailer. I snagged a few pictures of putting it on the trailer again. Hopefully for the last time.
When he got to my house yesterday I was just finishing washing it. He was pretty much speechless. Just kept walking around the car. We then talked for a little while about everything, then finally suggested we go for a ride. I thought he would head to the passenger side, but he went straight for the drivers seat. He and I rode around for a little while. I could tell he was a bit nervous and having difficulty getting a feel for it. Reminded me of my first several drives. We got back to my house and his son took my spot and off they went. I started cleaning up my garage a bit as I waited for their return. A little while later I heard a very loud engine sound just outside my neighborhood. I smiled a little. A few seconds later they pulled back up to the house with big smiles on their faces.
We really had no idea what to expect of the finished product as we built it. We figured it would be fast and scary. Turns out it is VERY tame and predicable. It will live a very happy and comfortable life at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle being a total cruiser. Then it has this little dark side to it where it turns into a different car. Being the first car at a stop light is a hoot. Full throttle will produce a two wheel burn out that sends the car straight down the line with almost no fish tale at all. The shift to second gear will continue the burn out, but that wants to bring out the rear end. I suppose more driver experience will keep that under control. It's the same way turning a corner from a stop light. At first I could light them up and turn the corner which would bring the rear end out wide and scare me. Over time I was able to get better control of it and have a pretty nice burn out that stayed in my lane.
Over all I put 135 miles on the car before giving it to John. I learned I could never own a car like that. I need to stick to old beater Jeeps. I'd kill myself.
We loaded up the car, strapped it down, and went to dinner. He then drove off into the sunset- or thunderstorm. (me shedding a single tear)

BUT, while at dinner he dropped the next bombshell on me. He pitched his next project to me. At first I was like no way. Can't be done (at least by me). Now it is growing on me and I think I want to take it on. It is right up my alley, as it will be a very unique build. Again, it's a car I know nothing about, but worse (or better) it's a drive train none of us know anything about (I think). He eased my biggest concerns when he told me the paint and body work is done, and the interior will be totally stock replacement parts from an online store, nothing custom. Just a quiet sleeper that sure to drive me bananas.
Till the next thread......

This has been such an epic ride, thanks for sharing the entire build on here... it's been fun to see it progress and come together. You did some amazing, highly detailed and meticulous work and it shows, the car came together perfectly.

The next one sounds fun, can't wait to see what's in store for you!

Greg thanks for the kind words. The build doesn’t follow the intent of this forum, but I think we all appreciate fabrication and builds in general so here it is. Plus, I just don’t have the energy to join another forum.

Nate, I didn’t leave you hanging. Read it again. ;)
