Richard, I've taken my Upcountry ZJ out on Rattlesnake with 235/75-15s and it did OK, but I am not a monster on the throttle. Sure the D30/D35 isn't as strong as D44 or D60. But driven with some thought and in most situations they aren't anything to worry about. I know plenty of people that hammer their D30s and haven't had any problems. And the D35, as long as you don't go with too big a tire, shouldn't ever be an issue.

I wheeled my ZJ with 30s, and my son has been using it of late with 31s. It is getting a two inch boost with new front fixed lower arms and adjustable upper arms, and swaybar discos here soon (meaning I need to get a couple projects finished first) and I'm not planning to do much more to it. I've got the parts on hand, just need the time and other projects cleared up.

PLENTY of people wheel their D30/D35 XJs, TJs, and ZJs with no trouble. Including Moab. BUT, if you decide to do more hardcore rock crawling, you might decide to carry spare parts.

I'm getting ready to stuff a D30 under my 4 banger Ranger. WHEN I break the axle shafts, I'll replace them with newer shafts for bigger axle U joints. And replace the 2 piece disco shaft with a one piece...

I checked classifieds, but didn't find it. Has he posted it anywhere else?

Its not 100% for sale quite yet. I offered Tacoma an opportunity to come take a look at it... others would be welcome to do the same however I still have some things I need to do to it. Keep in mind its a total budget 80, 92' w/190k, 3FE. Old Man Emu suspension. Interior is OK-Good, body is the same with peeling clear coat on the roof/hood and some minor dents. That said its going to sell for somewhere around $2500. Not bad for a rig you could literally hop in and head to Moab and beyond. I've got some small items I need to address on it, exhaust mount, taillight lens, brake booster, etc. After that I'll put up an ad here on RME for it

Mine has stock axles, and I haven't wheeled it at all. I picked it up at a salvage auction, fixed it, and put a 4 inch Pro-something lift kit on it together with 31 inch tires. Everyone here says the axles won't hold up, and Cody say I need a V8. So, I find myself thinking "why should I waste my time pouring sand down a rat hole". Getting stranded somewhere out in the sticks is a big issue to me, so I'm inclined to write this ZJ off as a false start and spend my time building on a better platform. Your post about the FZJ80 caught my attention.

You're not going to break anything on 31's unless you do something really dumb....bouncing around while on the throttle type stuff. 31's are just fine for the stock axles.

Maybe you're fine with the 4.0. On 31's it will probably cruise ok, but if you ever go bigger you'll deffinately wish you had the v8. I hated my 4.0 but I was also used to the v8 and hated cruising maxed out at 60-65 on the freeway. for some people that speed is fast.

Wow, really good deal for an FJ80. That should move quickly. Our FJ80 it totally stock other than 33" tires and it's taken us some great places.

Well, I got my FZJ80. It may take a little work, but I got it for a good price.

How can you tell?

He can't. :)

Only way to tell of a FZJ has factory lockers is looking at the dash, followed by looking at the axle center-section for the e-locker motor. You could just look at the dash, but there may be a slight chance the lockers were swapped out for unlocked 3rd members.

The vin tag says it has the K294 option.

did you really buy that? What would be the point?

It was a gamble. The vin code of K294 supposedly means it has the factory lockers. I've heard that only about one in ten comes with factory lockers. About 10 other ones that I looked at had the "K292" code which means "no lockers". If someone hasn't changed the axles, then this should have the lockers. I figured this would allow me to buy one with no lockers and retrofit it. I've been on a winning streak lately, so I'm hoping my luck holds. I won enough down at SEMA to buy a ChaseCam.
